Good on you OP, get some pics up :beerchug:
I know this is going slightly off topic, but the gearbox problem is definately "real".
My 72000 mile 6 is on its 3rd according to its service history. The last one in August last year.

3rd one at only 72k....pfff...it has either been poorly fixed every time or the previous owners beat the hell out of it, i can't really think of another scenario...

76k here, original box, 4 gearbox services already and it works perfectly! Here's hoping to another 100k with a service on the box every 20k.

Good to hear. I'm on original box, only 67k but still good to hear they can hold together. I'm still on DRC as well. It's either luck or driving sensible ie not launching a 2 ton car. Probably shouldn't have posted this gear box may die tomorrow :D

There's a filter plate in there too, and there's a procedure to follow, a few DIY guides around on net or £300 ish I believe at a specialist.

The first rebuild was by QST not long after the car had its MTM treatments. That was sometime in 2005 I think (I am in work so can't access paperwork to be more precise).
Can't remember who did the 2nd rebuild but I could look if I remember when at home.
Since reading RS2's write up on his gearbox strip down I am wondering whether the wrong length oil pick-up tube may have been the cause at any point.
I am getting increasingly paranoid about it to the point that I'm going to book it in at Chester Transmissions and get them to do a full fluid and filter change, just for peace of mind.

Good to hear. Mechanical sympathy could help....

This is the problem with spurious box rebuilds... To save a grand or 2, people will have them "rebuilt" instead of getting a new (exchange) box and who knows what is or isn't changed. If there's a duff spring in the ATF pressure regulator, or a hairline fracture in an ATF pipe going to a clutch, and it isn't spotted, then the box will just fail again once the pre-existing problems do their thing on the new components. The fact that people are putting them back together with the wrong ATF filter doesn't go far to reassuring me on the overall competence of these box rebuilders.

That's not to say that there aren't any good rebuilders out there.
