Clunking noise ...

Post by mavada » Sat May 18, 2013 12:36 pm

Hi all,

Found out the clunking noise from the right isnt coming from the <beep> drc system but from the inner right cv joint.
I can move the cv joint about 1-2 mm from left to right, even the bolds which it is attached with move with it...
The right side area around the cv joint is covered in old oil to, so i think theres not much oil (if any) in it...

Anyone experienced this before?

...the fact the bolds are moving along with the cv joint worries me.
dont know if its possible gearbox oil is going out this way...

I have this problem on my 2.5TDI A6 Avant. Started about 8 months ago and Ive been driving it since. Thinking of selling the car soon so Im going to get it sorted. Apart from the knocking noise when I turn right it doesn't alter the performance of the car at all and so I didn't take much notice of it really

Hmm noticed same with my new car yest, on hard lock left or right over bumpy road there is a knocking noise, can even feel intermittent slight tap in footwell.
Know its not DRC, can only assume CV boot joint or loose ARB's??

Any way of taking a picture of the inner CV joint so If I ramp it at my local tyre place I can have a look-see... Obviously I dont know what the hell Im looking at or for... :|

Mine was a loose front ARB and had the drop links etc replaced at the same time. Started off with a bit of clonking when pulling right out of T junctions, doing 3 point turns etc etc, then got slowly worse to the point where it was clonking pretty well all the time on undulations, driving up on to the driveway etc. Booked her in at that point and sorted.

But you need to know it's that, first. I'm not convinced from your description that it is.

...whats CJ?
Theres play in it axial and non axial.
ive shot a video a while ago while shagging the axle and thats exactly the sound i hear while driving...
Dont know if a worn inner cv joint can cause play axial and non axial.

Strange thing is the piece the cv joint is attached to is moving along with the cv joint itself.

... i can uctually move the inner cv joint about 1-2 mm in and out without moving the driveshaft...and while doing that its making the metal to metal noise which i hear inside the car while driving.

i think the inner cv joint can freely move inside (tripode version...) so i dont think its the cv joint itself...
