HELP! car alledgely beyond repair

Post by LondonRS6 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:00 pm

Ok

Quick and dirty

wife was shunted from behind, point of impact was passanger side rear, over exhaust. Car drove fine for the rest of jorney circa 30-40miles. Damage looked cosmetic.
Next day , start car engine mgt comes on, run basic vag come says intermittent reading.

Call insurance co, wheels set in motion, other person accepts fault , so assessor takes car away.

Ok the report state repairs will cost 7.1k and they value car at £9.5k So potential right off.

I was shocked at both figures.

2003 car with 65k, FASH, good condition with rns e

The report cites cracked rear bumper (also one of the rear sensors was pushed in),passenger exhaust tip was pushed down and they believe the engine mgt light is due to lambda sensor being damaged and will require the engine out. But these guys arent audi specialist but general insurance repairs.

Soounds like a heck of a lot.

What are my options? Get MRC/ Unit 20 to have a look at the report and see if they can get it down to inside 66%of the value of the vehicle. Sending it to audi will cost too much in labour. Just feel the quote for repairs is OTT and covering every potential eventuality.

btw report is 1 page with no real info aside from light impact,£2k labour, £2.65k parts!, £856 specialists (what is this?) and £459 paint then vat on top of all yhis.

Evident parts are now becoming very expensive either that or labour rates are.

Your problem is that its a group 20 car , so parts have to be expensive to match :(

I just ha da 5mph impact into someone and the bills going to be £5000 .......... at 5 mile an hour !!!

Insurance want to fit new parts and not repair things these days , example is , my 2 headlights wernt smashed or broken , except for 2 plastic mounting brackets. These 2 brackets could be plastic welded to repair, but accident repair centre says it needs 2 headlights .
2 new headlights £1200 ................ plastic weld repair £20 .

I would suggest you get a quote from a firm who understands rs6's and consider using 2nd hand parts to reduce cost.

My repair bill ( insurance firms) of £5k could have been done for around £2000 if the car had gone elsewhere.
Stupid part of my policy is that , if i don't use the insurers recommended repairers, i have to pay a £200 excess.............. to save them money ?, i dont think so.

In the event your insurers write the car off, see what they are prepared to pay out, and ask about keeping the salvage , see how much they want for it. ( That is of coarse if its an easy/cheap repair and the cars that good you want to keep it)
You could end up with a reasonable priced to repair car and get a few quid out of it, although it will show on an hpi check if you ever sell it and be worth less than a book priced car

Don't use their recommend garage, too much of an incestuous relationship there. The said the same to me four years ago and I pushed them and the car was sorted.

I have had a number of jobs done on past cars by my local BMW dealer, only 1 of the cars was a BMW. Always competitively priced and happy to work direct with insurers.

Get it back sharpish and find someone who you trust / have recommended to you. Don't trust them any further than you can throw them.

My BMW dealer will be doing any repair work to my C6 as they have covered my £1,000 excess for the year for £50, and are also doing my wheel refurb.

OP, find other RS 6 saloons with 65k miles priced at a higher price to yours, and then work on getting the price of repairs down. Check out 'quattro coachworks' they are supposed to do good bodywork. MRC/Unit 20 do mechanical repairs, so try quattro coachworks and tell them where the quote needs to be vs car value.

Most of these insurance approved repairers area joke a few years ago some idiot reversed into the drivers door of my wife's SUbaru Forrester it was only 6months old took it to the approved insurance repaire centre straight away he got the old clip board out and started quoting New door skin new door handle paint vat bla it was only a relatively small dent. Cost £1200 the insurance company then started messing around so I took it to a local guy he managed to pushit back out without cracking any paint looked like new cost £50. That's why insurance is so expensive as they all dip their dodgy little fingers in the pot

Appreciate all the replies. Admiral are being very helpful willing g to take car to any garage.
Insurance quote was done in Gloucestershire and all the garages I have used are in around London. E.g. rac automotive, Audi camberley. Evidently with higher labour rates than here in gloucestershire. That is why I was thinking of unit 20 or mrc. Not familiar with any one stop shops who do mechanical and bodywork. Any suggestions?

Have you considered allowing Admiral to write it off and then buy back and repair? 2

Ask for cash in lieu. You will get car back as is, cash for the value quoted for damage and they wont put the car on the register.

Not sure how far they would be from you but look up a place called Vic Sell autos in Harlow, Essex. Give them a call, you might be surprised what they can do and I believe they are insurance improved.

A friend had a quote for a Mk1 TT 225 due to minor front impact from rear ending a car which had a towbar so took out rads and a lamp as as well as bar and bumper.
Repair was £3k + and insurance wanted to write it off
With the agreement of the owner the garage got the same Hella headlamp from ECP for £350 less, and an air con rad from GSF (Nissens brand which is not bad) for £70 + VAT rather than £400 + VAT from Audi and these two adjustments saved the car from being written off.

I think Audi have a lot to answer for with their parts prices when ECP can sell THE SAME part for £350 cheaper and still make money.

In answer to the question, specialist repairs are usually anything that isn't paint/body and can include 4 wheel alignment, air con regas, even recovery. Not sure if it includes mechanical work e.g. removal of the engine but labour charge would be about right I think.
