RS6 in the snow

OK... so I justified (to my wife) swapping the 9-5 Aero for an RS6 on the basis that being a quattro it would be better in the snow (the Aero was mince). I've had a couple of runs to work in horrendous conditions (albeit only 3-4 inch deep snow) and the RS6 was great. Come Friday night (yesterday) I drove back to sunny Perthshire in awful conditions and did really well all the way to our very snowy uphill drive. Managed to get up to the house with lots of right foot - but when the snow in front built up until an evil wedge I gave up and accidentally parked sideways on the lawn. Woke up this morning and tried to rectify the situation but the fat tyres (no, not winter ones) gave up on me. Car is now parked doubly sideways on the lawn. My wife managed to last until 8.30pm when she eventually lost self-control and started laughing. This thing is rotten in foot-deep snow!
444bhp is a beautiful thing - but without winter tyres and ground clearance it's a bit embarrassing.
Oops... still sounds great when completely stationary tho'

If you are using "plenty of right foot" then I'm not surprised you are now marooned on your lawn.
High gear, tiptro mode, and gentle right foot and it would probably be parked neatly in you usual spot!

A FWD on winters will get further than AWD on summer when playing snow plow. It's not that quattro isn't brilliant, merely that summer tires are absolute rubbish in snow.

But quattro on winter tyres is a weapon! Big

every time when I drove off the lights or up ANY hill last Friday in Bristol.
Went to pick up my colleague from Portishead in the morning. Quite steep road to her house, covered with 15cm of fresh snow. My derv went downhill and uphill as if there was no snow.
8 hour later on my way home, the same road, still covered in snow, only my tyre marks present , no one else has even attempted to get up or down that road.
Shoveling neighbors looked at me, their entry points to digestive system widely opened.

I had no trouble with my summer Vreds in the snow, it was fun driving past the BMW and Merc owners smiling whilst they sat wheel spinning.

More fun was driving on the snow covered fast lane down the M5 southbound. Lot of other drivers doing 15-20mph in the middle or slow lane were honking at me when I was overtaking them at 40-50mph through the untreated fast lane. They had no idea that they were defeated by an experienced snow driver making the most out of the winter tyres and quattro system combo.

Just overtaking makes some eco nazi in his grot box get angry. Those skips will go as fast as an RS6 is if they drove off a cliff!

Funny thing is that I had more braking and cornering ability on that snow covered fast lane with my winter tyres, comparing to those honking eco nazis with summer tyres fitted, crawling through the slow lanes.
As my RC model club mate messaged me on that Friday: Winter tyres are amazing! Anyone who says they're not worth it hasn't tried them.
I was the one who has recommended winter tyres to him...

Good to hear you still have it!

It was shocking up here on the pzero's. Got going ok but would not stop and became an expensive sledge going downhill!! Def all down to tyres, sounds like vreds fair a bit better. The 335i is going well on its winters, not stuck yet (insert smug grin) but it does seem the most common car I've had to help this winter has been bmw's with summers on
Wish I had got to try it on those dunlop winters cos I bet it would have been unstoppable......once they stopped rubbing!!

Yep still going fine Chesney, I got rid of the winter tyres almost straight away couldn't stand the rubbing. We don't get much snow down here so no big deal. Funny thing is I sold the winter tyres on Ebay and sent them back to Scotland.
