Startup Rattle Resolution....

Been doing allot of reading up on the startup rattle that seems to blight these engines and other RS cars, stripped the rocker covers off, had a good poke about and the cams, tensioners and chains are all well with no noticeable wear at all! Have come to the conclusion that with a 5 valve setup there are just so many moving parts that the lot rattles befor oil pressure builds. Audi tech buliton seems to imply this as well... As such:

Gonna fit a 4 pint Accusump assembly from Merlin Motorsport to prime the engine before startup from cold. Also going o fit their EPC valve to ensure the unit is charged back up to the highest oil pressure experienced during that run so upon startup I get the most benefit.

Question.... When sitting in the car which side of the stock oil cooler is feeding back to the engine and... Does the stock setup have a thermostats shutoff valve as if not I will need to fit a non return valve just before where I tap in.

Didn't per say but it was bloody tight both sides, when I screwed the tensioner down the pads were virtually unmarked and little sideways movement in the chain. Being an engineer that's good enough for me and mines silent on a hot start after a few hours sitting, just over night or a week being left gives a rattle. The idea of a few psi oil pressure before cranking really appeals to me as well just to protect all them mating surfaces!

Yeah, wouldn't be a bad thing at all. What the cost of a system like that?

DIY fit its going to come to under £450 I think, just waiting for Merlin to reply to my mail. PS, do not look on evil bay as Demon Tweeks prices take the piss!

You'll be gutted if it doesn't fix your rattle. :)

Just to check, this is the bit you checked?

Might be worth checking your variable valve timing with the vagcom first, in case anything is iffy there. Might save you the hassle of installing the oil pressure kit if it turns out to be that.

What about hydraulic followers? Could be one of them. Surely better to replace the weak / leaky one rather than mask the problem? Just a thought.

Totally agree but with Audi admitting they rattle on start up, ever other owner admitting theirs does it and the other benefits this brings its going on anyway. Once the cars back on the road it's going to unit 20 for a full health check anyhow. Also mine only rattles when it's cold which to me implies its just a lack of oil during the initial few seconds and having seen all the parts up there there is allot which needs oil to run quiet.

Yes your photo is part of what I looked around. Have nice new pads if anyone needs them! LoL

How did you manage to get the other rocker cover off? The one that Audi reckons the engine has to come out to get off... :audibash:

Mine doesn't rattle hot or cold but I did have new tensioners fitted.

It ain't easy but having said that it literally fel back on and I did scratch the new red powder coat. You need to bend the waterpipe out of the way but DO NOT allow any stress to go to the joint at the back of the engine. I just braced mine and bent it along the side and all was, is fine.stupid design I have to say, almost as bad as the oil filter location!! :audibash:

The cam chain adjusters cause problems and the one way oil feed valves become weak .

Run the engine, measure temp one side and the other. That'll give you the direction of the oil flow. Put a fan on it to increase cooling.

Unless it's in the training manual. Might be. Have a look in it (see footlong's repository).

Yeah, it's in the training guide. If it's to be believed then the cooled oil comes out of the cooler and goes to the filter.

I'm being a spaz. Both sides of the oil cooler go to the oil filter body.

According to the diagram it's the side that's closest to the filter that is the exit from the cooler.
