I think we need to put mods into perspective. There are mods that compromise the original characteristics of the car in the pursuit of my power, handling etc, and there are simple improvements. Amar is going down the same route as me, but to be honest I don't really consider my car 'modded'. For me real modding is changing the fundamental characteristics of the car, and in our case, thickening the anti-roll bars, adding more efficient intercoolers and freer flowing exhausts are all only improving the compromised standard parts that were fitted, rather than really changing the car in any way for the worse. Due to noise and emission regulations the standard exhaust is flawed, but an uprated one does nothing but improve both the sound and response. Same with intercoolers, uprated ones are simply of higher quality than the cheap factory fitted ones, they don't compromise performance in any way. Uprated ARBS again only improve turn-in and reduce roll, you wouldn't find the ride compromised by them at all. Finally properly done remaps again only improve the car, better fuel economy, reliable gear changes in manual mode, and quicker shifting. The modest power increase does little to stress the box and the engine can easily take the power. Box failures have shown that the likelihood of problems is unchanged with a remap, it's down to how the box is driven and maintained.

So in essence, I don't know what the fuss is about, a sensibly 'enhanced' car is a far better one that what comes out of the factory, as it doesn't have the cost/noise and other compromises to worry about. I can't see the negatives there?? It's not like half the engine's been changed or anything, fundamentally the car is still mostly the same, just better.

Mart.

Apologies if I came across as a bit firm - I knew full well you were already arranging the cambelt - just don't splash the cash on anything else until the cambelt is booked, completed and paid for!

Personally I'd also live with the factory sport exhaust for a while - you already know yours is much louder than the system on the non-plus models - I'd say yours is easily louder than a RS4 (yes RS4) resonated cat back Milltek. Youll find yourself driving around with the windows down all the time - I managed Bedford to Cirencester with them down for the entire journey at the start of the month!! Appreciate you can only really do that when you haven't got passengers though.

As you know Dave I've been in Amars car whilst it belonged to the previous owner, still cannot believe how much louder it is compared to stock RS6 Avant which I sampled a few years earlier. I think at the very very minium its on parr with resonated cat back Milltek RS4, if not louder. It's certainly louder than mine!

Well yes - DK went straight from a 54 plate plus to an RS4 with Milltek! Maybe my mind playing tricks.

id say its on par with a std RS 4 with sport mode on

add a milltek to a B7 and all hell breaks loose

B6's arent that loud with a milly .... and the C5 in std mode is pretty quiet

I went from a Plus exhaust to a resonated Miltek and I can confidently say it's much louder. The C5 resonated Miltek is actually no quieter from the outside than the non-res, it's just not boomy or droney in the cabin which people often mistake for being louder. Reason people think the resonated is quiet is that the C5 is so well sound insulated, but hearing it from the outside is a different story. I've had res and non-res so can comment from experience.

PS - The catless downpipe makes it sound even better... :jump_clap:

Hi Ian, no you didn't come across firm at all, I didn't intend to either. They don't have the damn thumbs up emotion as per TSN here, so sorry if I came across annoyed. Well I want Unit 20 to do the work and as it is quite a way away, I thought id just get it all done at the same time and take advantage of Grizz's free service with every Milltek sold offer! I'd probably end up getting one anyway. :beerchug:

I could not have put it better. Ditto to all the below. :notworthy:

It might get a little enhanced, but it will be regularly detailed, do less then 5k miles a year and serviced regularly with Audi only parts or better. I'm going to have Martin change the gearbox oil too. I'm not going to cut corners. It will be properly warmed and cooled after being driven. If I wanted to sell it 10 years down the line to a collector, I'd simply put the old parts back on and sell it completely standard (bar Coilovers) I'm only fitting quality components (Miltek) by quality people (Grizz) so the car will not be any worse for it.

Know what you mean about having it all done at the same time - I got the clutch, engine mounts, exhaust from manifold back and a few other jobs all done on my 205 GTi at the same time for this reason. Bill was still four figures but it was worth it, drove like a different car afterwards.

Thanks Ian. :thumb:

Well, I took the grill off today and had a lookiesee at my intercoolers, this is what I saw!

Image

The other one is leaking too, but not as much. I'm hoping to seal them up for the time being then if they leak again get new ones courtesy of warranty direct and pay the difference for wagners maybe? How much is intercooler refurbishment?

I think sportec do intercoolers now, but knowing sportec they'll cost an arm and a leg.

The DIY fix is a few quid... As long as you get it right :) Did you see the sticky and the link in my useful links thread?
