You'll be amazed at dealer incompetence of making the relevant checks.
Plus you've just bought it....

Something to do with the 20+ hours labour to fit it i suspectposterboyj wrote:Really? A1 'Premier' Transmissions are not on my list for rebuilding my 'box.MalcolmSu wrote:care to expand on that?bam_bam wrote:there's no way I'll be using A1 Premier Transmissions.
Whichever way you look at a replacement RS6 gearbox, it's gunna be £5k-£5.5k, the labour being the most bitter pill to swallow.

I'm banking on Shoppinit learning how to get the 'box out Tozo style. He can get the '6 box out in 3 hours flat. If we were paying only 6-8hrs in labour then this would be a non-issue with warranty and non-warranty owners...
As it stands, I think those going through a gearbox issue need to be informed and extremely firm. Throwing money at anything short of a full strip down and rebuild is worthless, therefore, a replacement 'box is the surest way of a result. i.e. replacing only the TC or doing VB work isn't a sure thing and will likely fail in the not too distant future.
IMO If you make enough noise about pushing the replacement option and even better, write to the warranty co and/or the Audi stealer insisting on this course of action. Then I hardly see how they can justify charging you for a 'fix' that didn't work or, future work due to their insisted faffing.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
I can't help thinking this is the best course of action. Are they really going to flatbed your car 800 miles return trip to save a grand over the cost of an exchange as opposed to repairing it? You might have to take the gloves off...bam_bam wrote:IMO If you make enough noise about pushing the replacement option and even better, write to the warranty co and/or the Audi stealer insisting on this course of action. Grizz did say that he could get the box out without the engine, but I can't remember the reasons he gave for prefering not to.
If it happens to mine I will certainly have a go at getting the box out without the engine. We know it can be done, so I don't see why it can't be repeated. I am feeling emboldened by my successful head gasket repair on my golf

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
The garage who have my car can get the box out in 4 hours without taking the engine out, you have to take one of the turbos off and the studs quite often snap so have to be drilled and retapped.
Shame they still can't fix the bloody thing!

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
there must be some kind of diy to get the box out without taking the engine out...there are numerous rumours it can be done, but how???????
ive also heard some did their cambelt themselves...

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Totally agree......depending on what my ATF service throws up,I will be looking at a new box. With the engine out Cam belt, lambdas and anything else thats labour intesive will be getting changed out....no-one likes it when these things happen but when your talking about £4K for a rebuild and £5.5K for a brand new unit with 2 year warranty it's a bit of a no brainer.......ps I have no warranty and with the f*cking about Malcolm is going thru just now I have no intention of getting one.....it's a 8 year old car with a known gearbox weakness...the majority of us bought these cars circa £15K with the inevitable box and suspention change....£7K......... its still a lot of car for £22Kbam_bam wrote:A1 'Premier' Transmissions are not on my list for rebuilding my 'box.MalcolmSu wrote:care to expand on that?bam_bam wrote:there's no way I'll be using A1 Premier Transmissions.

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
After having lots of engines out there is no was i would do just a box ..
There are so many thinks that could get damaged or moved .. so it would only bite you on the ass ..
A new box is £3050 + vat ..if it ever brakes take it back to audi .. no messing about ..
A new box all in fitted is £5500 ISH...

Bam Bam quoted £2350 + vat......Grizz £3050 + vat........who's right?
Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Grizz was giving the Audi price, I think.
