Feel bad for you man, really do. Still think it was worth a shot with the fluid and filter, but just a shame it didnt have the results we all hoped for.

If you want to keep the car in Glasgow, then maybe A4Audi to pull and replace the box, with Mackie doing the overhaul would be a way to go, but tbh for something this big, you wont go wrong shipping the car down to Grizz.

Thanks Guys - I think Grizz is the next port of call..

Sweegie - was worth a throw of the dice..some you win and all that!..would it take any settling time as it was new fluid etc before it resolved itself...or am i just peeing in the wind..??

On another note - if i was to trade in against a new audi - how much is a reasonable trade in as is?!?!?1

Well I certainly wouldn't stop driving it & it's not impossible that it will get better, but the sludge is not a good sign. Is it only 2nd gear that's causing the problems? I'd take it gently for a week and see if it makes a difference. Maybe drive it in tiptro mode too to avoid all unrequired gearchanges....

Out of curiosiry, did they change all the fluid (ie do the drain and refill at least twice)?

Hi

Yeh, its only happening in between 1st and 2nd gear...otherwise gear changes smooth..

I ran it today, and it only done it once in an hr or so...

I will get them to redrain the gearbox ad check the pipes as mentioned..

Strange one..

Look up tsr-performance-parts on the web or on eBay. They are offering to totally rebuild your gearbox for £1850 according to their ad!!! Apparently it's a 2 week turnaround though and they are in Somerset or somewhere that way. Seems its a drive in, drive out price though. Almost too good to be true.

This is copied and pasted straight from their eBay ad:

This listing is for the replacement of your Audi RS6 4.2 V8 bi-turbo gearbox with a reconditioned exchange unit.

Mainly due to poor maintenance schedules the ZF5hp24A Auto gearbox fitted to these vehicles can suffer with many problems resulting in slipping in gear, juddering and even total loss of drive. Your Audi main dealer will land you with a bill of around £7,500 for a replacement unit with fitting, we have great experience of these vehicles and can do this job for a fraction of the cost. Replacing the gearbox requires engine removal and turbos to be removed, all associated gaskets and seals are replaced at this time also.

please note this listing is the labour charge including new gear oils , filters and gaskets etc.

with the reconditioned unit there are a few options which vary from £1500 up to £3000 please call us to discuss your needs further.

Looks like you've answered your own question! The £1850 is just the labour plus oils and then you have the reccon unit at £1500-£3000 on top. That's similar to Unit 20 or MRC prices.

The main pain is that they need the car for two weeks (while they get the box re-built), whereas if you go to Grizz or MRC they usually have a unit in stock that they can get reccon'ed before you take your car, so its a 24hr job to swap boxes.

MRC won't touch recon boxes. I called them up last week to see if they would offer the same service as AMD for a recon box with warranty fitted for 3.5k.

He said he only fit new.

spoke with a dealer yesterday about my gearbox.
Car's been in for minor front end accident repair, and the work sheet i 'obtained' at the accident repair centre says they drained and re-filled the box.
I questioned them on it, and they denied they did that in the end as they worked round it, so i asked the Audi dealer how much for a drain and re-fill.

They stated they don't have a price as they don't do that work , as the box is a 'sealed for life' unit !! .
I asked what happens if the oil cooler fails then ?, how does the box get refilled, they said there is a level bung for it, but they dont advise changing the oil, ....wait for it........
... as they find most cars they do change the oil on have gear change problems afterwards , hence its not a service item on the computer.

They recommended that they keep the car overnight so its stone cold, get the temp to 35degreees , run the car thru the gears, then check the level, then top up if need be, and recheck it again after going thru the gears a 2nd time and getting the temp back to 35 degrees. If the level is low they will top it up, but dont advise to change the lot. and that's from an Audi dealer. I do like this dealer and his honesty

ZF recommend an oil and filter change between 50,000 and 75,000 miles or 8 years on these gearboxes, depending on how hard the car is driven. Given the nature of the RS6, my oil and filter will get changed every year.

Sealed for life is just sealed until it breaks.

Tis true that some get faults after a g-box service. Grizz did mine about 10k ago and the oil was like new, i will get it changed every 20k.
