I had a E39 B10V8 and found it bettered mannered than the E39 M5 but not as quick at the top end or as good handling on the edge (and with an auto box) but as an all rounder it was the best package I have ever had - but you will miss the oomph of a turbo car if you are use to a RS6. I have never driven a B10V8s but I think it just improved the top end and not the low end grunt. Depends on your driving style.
Check out the B5 as this should be the best of both worlds. Alpina suspension tends to be more compliant than M suspension (which is Alpina's trademark) but still handles well and all of them corner really sweetly and dont feel you are battling the quattro system at turn in to get it round a corner.
Watch out for BMW/Alpina gearboxes which are ZF sourced - they have the same problems as the rs6 but not quite as severe.....
