OK he is adamant that the gearbox came out. I'm not progressing it any further. I'm not in a position to argue. After spending 2 hours chatting to him I had the impression he is very knowledgeable and been doing this for over 30 years. I hear what you all say and I'm not convinced either. But hey, it's fixed. Next time I'll ask for some pics!!!! Which to be honest I was going to anyway but completely forgot until it was too late.
If anyone wants his details he is more than happy.

With all the sensors in these cars, you think they could have put one in for the ATF level!

Yeah, why have sensors in an engine mount and nothing for g/b fluid level?

I think Audi's definition of 'lifetime' would be significantly different to any of ours.

You can't argue with the logic though, when the fluid is dead, so is the box.
