How did that happen?!

You'd better get them to check that the wheel isn't buckled. Maybe all that happened at the same time.

The last time Mother in Law drove her car into her garage she reported a loud bang as it was doing so. I'll put the wheel on my balancer and run it up and check to see if its buckled or not.

I wish I had a wheel balancer. I'm so sick of tyre places doing a crap job. On the Passat I had to get it done 3 times before it was right.

We bought tyre changing and balancing machine when we were running F3 cars and were doing a lot of tyre changes (£ 600 a set and get changed after 2 hours track time).

It’s the tracking that bugs me when they can’t get the steering wheel straight

Yeah. Same. It’s not rocket surgery. Just laziness.

I think it might be both rocket science and brain surgery though. Because every car, ever, I've had done, they haven't got it quite right, even if only by a fraction.

Given that I have a broken front spring, to fix that means A) finding a replacement, and good practice would suggest replacing as pairs, and B) removing the damper to fit the spring will require the DRC system to be disconnected and later recharged (at not inconsiderable expense) and C) despite my car being low mileage, it's still approaching 20 yrs old and as I will likely have DRC problems in the future, it would seem now is the time to consider the alternatives.

I see Bilstein B14 PSS seem pretty good value as they include springs. I'm not intending to use this car on track, so don't need adjustability to the nth degree of the B16 PSS9 unless an overriding reason to disregard one over the other. Opinions?

Otherwise I can use Koni's but I would need to source a replacement pair of front springs. I can (and do) have springs made at fairly modest cost and could use my springs as patterns. I also notice that three of the four options on 7Zap also cross reference to a Sachs springs and suggests the springs are also used on other A6 and also A4/S4/RS4 models. Anyone tried Sachs springs? Anyone got a couple of spare original front springs?

I’ve got a feeling you can disconnect the shock without depressurising the system. I’ll have to check the manual. It’s been a while since I have thought about anything DRC related.

Since yours is a bona fide barn find and future classic maybe you should keep it as original as possible. Even if you have to recharge the DRC you can do it yourself.

There’s 4 brand new shocks on eBay at the moment that look like a bargain. Along with a front suspension setup that includes both springs.

If they have valved connectors then that makes some sense.

I intend to try and keep it standard, or any mods that get done are reversible. I'm not going to throw any OE stuff away.

Thanks. Will trawl ebay.
Are Avant and Saloon shocks the same?

If I may...there are some mods that just make the car what it should have been. Bufkin pipe being a prime example.
