I've seen the following:

M155 5EXY (or something along those lines. Pulled up for a closer look and it was quite the opposite!)

SCR33M (on a red Ferrari around my way; beautiful car, I want I want I want!)

Also saw one with B19 CCK which made me chuckle. Modest.
911 Turbo
Subaru Impreza WRX

I think it looks w*nk. ;)
I wouldn't want a plate which made my car look older.
Apart from that, the first time the police stop you, you will have to revert back to the MY51 XRS spacing again so the plate will be worthless.

I'm starting to think that all personal plates look naff these days. I dunno what it is but I just don't like the look of them. Why would you want something on the car that makes everyone on the road think 'Oh dear' especially if you've altered the spacing - it's just so pretentious.

I agree with Rupert, why would you want to make your car look older? Further, with the advent of ANPR, you'd be getting stopped all the time and with the correct spacing, half of these so-called cherished plates look totally pants and would become anonymous and impossible to sell-on.
Everytime I see someone with a private plate now, I can't help but shake my head, especially when it's on a nice car.

I think the reason so many people hate 'em is because from a psychological point of view, there is somehow that feeling that you've got a nice car and you are somehow rubbing it in by having the private plate. Even if it's just your initials, or maybe the spacing is correct, people still associate private plates with wealth and so it seems to just infuriate them the fact that you are somehow trying to advertise that and that having the nice motor in the first place isn't enough.

There is something very humble and tasteful about having a nice/expensive car and having the normal/original plate that affords you admiration from people, not contempt and to accept the fact that you have a nice motor without rubbing their noses in it. Be honest guys, how many times have you seen someone on the road with a 'cherished' plate with crap spacing and thought to yourself 'What a plum'?

C'mon RS6 boys, everyone knows it's an RS6, lose the naff private plates, you don't need 'em! Just let everyone admire your car for what it is and not what it's pretending to be - spend that money on a purposeful mod such as upgrading the RNS-D to RNS-E, or perhaps a remap, now that would be money well spent. And In the case of the one posted above B19 CCK, people would certainly think you were one! Sorry fellas but that's just how I feel, they are a pet hate of mine! Anyone agree?

Cue irate cherished plate owners flaming me for the use of the word 'pants'!!

No need ! you are just going into reverse mode.

I have done the same with sat nav. Nothing more fun than looking at the place you are going on google maps and then driving there with a bit of guess work.

I have no problem with people associating plates with wealth I have private plates on both my cars that refer to my business. My bikes all have their standard numberplates on.

The only bit I think you are talking crap on is than a standard numberplate is "humble" it just means that you haven't seen a plate that you really like or means a lot to you.

K9 JAB is perfect for my local vet why not enjoy it like you might want different wheels or exhaust.

I did see H 7 on a new Suzuki micro car the other day driven by a purple rinse old granny. Plate must out value the car by 50 -1.
RS6 C5 05 plate very tidy.
Past.... Only have 500 characters ! RR Sport X 2 Nice but boring RS6 C5 03 Sold due to losing 25K of value in 12 months of ownership !
Still have a 72 GT6 and a few Big Bikes....

plates

Wow Rupert you're a bundle of joy arent you?

If it makes a member happy (Matty Supra) then just buy it.

And yes I do own a private plate that i've had for 20 years and back then they were rare and I don't have illegal spacing and it was a present from my mum who passed away last year. I get loads of people complimenting the plate and have done on all my cars and I dont think its precocious or otherwise
If I see a genuine private plate like the guy quoting the vets K9 JAB then good on the owner and he wouldn't cause me offence or jealousy

personally I think its pettiness Rupert

Its all about personal choice and anyone is welcome to their views as long as its not a personal attack!!

I don't have a private plate, but if you pick wisely some are a quite an investment, particularly at DVLA auction. To me, the shorter the plate the better.

I still see private plates as a good investment...

I have ALF 130Y on our RS6 and also P1NEA on my father in laws car, paid £500 for the first one about 12 years ago and bought the second one about 8 years ago for £250.

What are they worth now?

I don't know, probaly a lot money to the right person!!!

Would I sell them? Maybe depends how desperate i am for money!!!

Better than having you money tied up in shares.

Mind you if Mr Gordon (Darth Vader) Brown keeps putting fuel prices i may have to!!! :D

Whichever way i look at it they are worth more than what i paid for them..

It's a personal choice and he asked for opinions, if you think that's of no importance then that's fine :). I've seen some Real Good Plates, ones which relate to the car or surname or whatever, but in my opinion MY51 XRS is not one of them.
Don't delude yourself thinking that everyone likes "creative" spacing and wonky fonts, I don't think it looks good and I never will, but if you want it, buy it!

I appreciate the argument regarding some plates being pretentious, but without my cherished registration on my car, my car just doesn't feel like it is mine.

To me, a private plate adds an important final touch and helps to personalise the vehicle. When I bought my RS6 and was awaiting the paperwork to come through, I just hated having the old plate on and just couldn't wait to add my stamp on it.

Just my two penneth.
