I bought a new genuine one from Audi Tradition for when I need it as mine is still on the original one.
Bought the new one some time ago but as yet I have not needed to install it.

I fitted a chinese one recently. Has worked fine ever since fitting. Bought 2 to keep one as a spare of the new one fails.
Modified the gearbox mount so now it should take about 10 mins to change.

Yeah probably Ben.
I have heard good things about the cheap Chinese ones. Not so good feedback on the expensive genuine ones.

I can only go with my own experience. The genuine one on my car has been working perfectly for 21 years. So I can only Hope that the longevity of the replacement is similar.
However I have made a mental note to perform the installation mods (as in the FAQ section) to make the replacement of future switches a much simpler experience.

Replacing the torx bolts with standard good grade m6 bolts is a good idea. M6 bolts x how long ?

While my engines out I've also done the gearbox mount mod too so I can make a nicer job of it and thank myself in the future if needed.
Bolts if I recall were 16mm long. I can double check if you want to be absolutely anal about it but 16mm or there abouts should work anyway.
Also filed the shaft down that the switch slides onto as suggested by others. There's no need for all that to be hanging out. F125 now slides on and off with gearbox mount in position with ease.

See pic to give an idea of the amount needed to be cut off.

Clearly wasnt on Audi's design radar that the switch would have to be replaced while on the car. It's not a great design at all.

But with the modifications to the gearbox mount, the spindle and changing the bolts it makes it a super simple job

Come the new year I will get this mod done and the new switch fitted.
Keep the old one “just in case”.

How have people been cutting the wing off? It looks a bit of a nightmare in-situ.

I used a recip saw, couple decent blades and it was off. No damage to the rest of the car. Took a while as the steel is very hard!
