I don't suppose anyone knows the part number for the two pipes that normally corode onto the oil cooler. The garage is trying to get the part from Audi, but Audi aren't sure them selves and instead they're asking for photos of the pipes. So if anyone knows, i'd appreciate this information.

Thanks,

Anil

Depends on the VIN of the car. Looks like there was a change halfway through production.

Gearbox oil (top pipes)
Left: 4B3 317 817E (G for later cars)
Right: 4B3 317 819D

Engine oil (bottom pipes)
Left: 4B3 317 815B
Right: 4B3 317 816B (C for later cars)

Left is from POV of driver.

I've finally heard back from the garage and the car is now running! They had it on for 45 minutes and seemed OK, after changing the cambelt, water pump, alternator, radiator, oil cooler, full engine service, N75, DVs, all fluid and they've changed the oil in the gearbox too.

They've yet to take it for a proper run, which they'll do once they change the oil in the gearbox again, they didn't have the tools to flush it so instead they've drained and filled it once, let it run to get up to temp and then are going to change it again, including the filters/magnets, at which point they'll take it for a ride.

Once that's complete and successful, they'll change the one way valves and pads and hopefully it will be ready to brace the road again.

It’s such a relief that the engine is OK so far, only remaining concern is the gearbox, which should be OK hopefully, as I've seen the car go backwards and forwards with no judder/slip, which would presumably be expected even in 1st gear? No faults are registered in the car for the gearbox or even the torque converter so I'm quite positive that all will be OK. The car has 86K on it but I'm not sure whether the gearbox has previously been changed. Presumably at the mileage I'm currently at, I should expect to have to change the gearbox soon.

You could phone Audi spec check 08005423037 and ask if it ever had work on the gearbox

Not necessarily, mines done 137K on the original 'box and I've only just (this week) had a recon. And even after that mileage it was still functioning correctly, changing smoothly, only a VERY occasional harsh jolt from 1st to 2nd...the only reason I had it changed was because the TC fault code 17125 - Torque Converter Clutch: Stuck OFF / No Power being transferred was showing on a recent health check and the clutch packs sometimes slipped under full load. It makes sense financially IMO to have a full recon 'box with new TC than just to swap out the old TC for a new one; labour is a big chunk of the final bill & that's roughly the same for a 'box or just a TC change.
Change the fluid regularly and you could well see 200K miles, there are a few out there with big miles on the original 'box

121k on my box and still sweet, with no TC errors. My policy is to change the fluid anually, sacrifice the odd goat and generally treat it with respect...

Crap remaps will hurt the gearbox so are best avoided.

Have you got yours mapped? I originally wanted to get mine mapped too but now im in two minds because i don't want the gearbox to go and i know they're weak.

From the gearbox survey thread, there was no real correlation between mapped cars and increased incidence of gearbox failure. Granted, it was some pretty rough and ready man-maths, but that's how we likes it round here.

Stands to reason that the more torque the box has to handle, the more it'll be likely to wear at an increased rate, but I suspect that the biggest failure mode is due to a couple of weak components inside the box that cause it to harikari prematurely no matter how much torque you're putting through it (within reason).

Morality: stop worrying about the box and enjoy the car.

Spoke to the Audi Spec check guys and they told me that whilst it was in for servicing with Audi, there was work done under warranty, which totalled £4.5k. When I asked him what it was for, he said it just says "AGB" replacement. Presumably that stands for Automatic Gear Box? That's what the Audi guy assumed anyway. This was in 2005, when the car had 37k mileage, now in 2014, it's got 50k miles on the box, 87k in total-. Bodes well for mapping!!

It also had new engine management wiring put in - not sure what that's all about.

Still not driving the car around yet though. Waiting on discs and pads to arrive and be fitted all round – going for Zimmermans, a lot cheaper than Audi discs, probably go with OEM Audi pads, I've seen people pair these Zimmermanns up with the Ferodo pads but I can't find any Ferodos for the rear pads and ideally I'd like to keep the pads all one model.

Just spoken to the garage they said they took it for a drive and it got down the road and the right hand exhaust was bellowing an extremely high about of smoke, only when driving, not when idling.

Any ideas what could be causing the issue? The garage seems to think the turbos gone and that it might be passing oil, but I'm really hoping that this isn't the case.

Smoke or steam? Is it using oil or water? Heard of a couple of head gaskets failing.

Definitely smoke and the garage seem to think it's related to oil. They said that the smoke pretty much covered the whole road.
