Price of TC compared with new gearbox
Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
If they change every single bit in the box, like ZF do, then all well and good. I personally wouldn't play Russian roulette with gearbox builders.

Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
Some of the RS6s for sale are at 80k or more and still on the original 'box.
Once they get to this sort of mileage, is it only a matter of time before the gearbox goes or can they last the life of the car if they're serviced regularly?

Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
Mine is still on the original box and (touch wood) going strong.
My thoughts on the matter are that there are some that have components of varying quality / durability in them that lead to bigger failures. With my old ZF box in the rangey, there is a way to test the line pressure. I bet that if you could measure the ATF pressure being applied in boxes that fail quickly as opposed to those that last you would a significant difference.
I am starting to think that the 517 trans valve body might be the way to go to help with box longevity. It's a good halfway measure - the box doesn't need to come out and you get the improved driveability.
Very definitely, though, it is always a question of time with autoboxes. They have "consumables" in them. Like brakes or a clutch.
I think that sympathetic driving helps with box longevity, too.

Thanks.
I have a contingency budget for things going wrong; I was just wondering if it definitely needed to include £2.5k for a 'box rebuild.

Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
What do you think is a sensible service interval for the gearbox? I've got paperwork that shows mine's been done three times in 70,000 miles, @ 50k, 57k and 67k.
Every 10k, 20k, 40k miles?

Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
At worst, by servicing the box now, you will expose a condition that was about to reveal itself anyway.

If It's gonna go It's gonna go. Best thing to do is pressure Ben at AMD into getting a sorted 517 box.

Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
no fault simpoms as of yet 'touch wood' its running great, im just wondering if its worth doing to prolong life, only thing is ive read that by doing the oil and filter change now you can just disturb things and cost yourself a small fortune lol

Just get it changed mate, we all live in fear.

Re: Price of TC compared with new gearbox
Just service it. It won't do it any harm. If it fails afterwards, it was about to fail anyway and was only being kept going by the swarf.
