I've always been lucky that I get a company car so the RS6 has always been pleasure miles, days off, holidays etc. but since we sold our third car - a Polo TDi last spring Mrs. D has been using the RS6 on a daily basis.

I've got an A4 allroad 2.0TDi quattro presently (I've had a few of these now) and it regularly gives 48mpg on a commute and is showing 41.5mpg on the memory2 reading (if the DIS is accurate of course). My commute regularly shows the same kind of economy as the govt. "combined" measurement.

Mrs. D has now been using the RS6 since April last year as a daily driver - it's averaging 15mpg due to the amount of town driving it's doing. I can get it to show 27mpg or thereabouts on a run (again DIS info).

BUT.

This week I've been using a B8 S4 S-tronic for a few days due to the allroad being out on test with a customer. The B8 S4 is meant to give combined mpg of well into the 30s, with its clever de-clutchable supercharger, S-tronic with trick programming etc. Although I like the performance and agility the economy on that is SHOCKING in the real world… 22mpg where my old S4 B6 V8 would give 25 and the RS6 regularly shows 26.

Anyway - back on topic I would LOVE to drive the RS6 daily but there's no way I could consider to run my RS6 for my daily commute - it would cost £20 extra per day by my reckoning in comparison to the TDi.

I use my 6 most of the time. I have an Alfa Romeo Mito pool car at work and I intended to use that to run around in, bur the truth is if it is more that a five minute drive I use the RS!! Any other car is just that ( a means to get from A to B) and why would I just want to get somewhere when I could enjoy getting there instead!! I wish I could use the Mito more it does like 50 to the gallon rather than 11.

Yes, I've been doing my sums, initially against my 1995 2.0 golf cabrio vs a vw tdi. I got all technical and made an excel spreadsheet working out mpg/work mileage/tax .With just road tax and fuel and doing 11k a year, changing to a diesel saved me £700 a year.

I already insure 3 cars via mulicar and I'm paying a shade over £1000 for all three, which I think is good. My wife has a Seat Leon tdi with low road tax which gets between 50-60 mpg on a run. She uses it mainly for town, so it averages around 40 mpg.

I also added the 6 into the spreadsheet and promptly hid the column before showing the wife!!

Not everyone will agree, but, for me, it allows me to own a supercar without having to sacrifice holidays and money from the family!

Mk 4 Golf is a great car IMO, it got VW back on track as the Mk3 was not their best effort, the build quality and engineering of the Mk4 was miles ahead if the Mk3. Friend of mine picked up a Mk4 1,9 TDI 90bhp for his first car, had it remapped and added Transporter 2.5 injectors and it is a pretty nippy car, producing around 115 bho. Covered 120k miles although it looks as though it has done 60k and it feels as solid as a rock, gear change and steering are spot on, bargain for £1800.


As for BMW, grew up with that marque, best car we had was a E46 330 sport Convertible, worst was easily the X3, pile of garbage, crap fuel economy and the ride was awful, bone hard.


Best pound for pound car my parents have owned would be a 8P 2003 A3 2.0 TDI, superb quality, good ride and 55 mpg no problem. Top car.

I used the wife's car for my 25 miles each way to work today for the first time.

I drove to work the usual way as I do in my old golf and I managed to get 61mpg. On the way home I really tried, wasn't coasting, but I was being very careful. I manages 69 mpg!! At best I can get 40-41 mpg out of my golf, which is not bad for a 17 yr old 2.0 petrol.

That's basically makes my mind up!

I must be getting old! 10 years ago I used to worry about the 0-60 time, now I get excited how much mpg I can get!!

I don't think buying a DB9 will do much for your fuel consumption issues.

(the reason your now worrying about mpg and not mph is because fuel was probably a lot cheaper then).

A friend of mine has an Aygo, bloody death trap, so slow and very bouncy. The windscreen is so close you dont look through it, you wear it. I would personally buy a second hand Polo.

RS6 was my daily driver... about 20k to 25k miles a year in it, although if i'm honest, i was lucky and had company fuel card so my bill was only the tax on any fuel used. i'm doing about 25k a year at present with 115 mile round trip to work and back each day. I've always thought, the more miles you drive, the nicer the car you need... no point having a nice car only as a trophy and never driving it!

I use mine daily, only a short hop to work of about 12 miles but seems to keep everything working. I've always though the cars that are only used occasionally are more prone to problems.
