UPDATE - not good news

Right guys, it's been quite some time but I have an update.  I've been really busy with work and other cr4p so I've only had the odd day on the odd weekend to check the car over.

After changing the DV's, N75, N249, N112, ABS sensor, brake light switch, vacuum hoses, MAF wiring and plugs the car was still running fine but literally no turbos.

With all the cheap options/preventive maintenance done, i finally managed to get it down to Doug at MRC (they're the closest specialists to me, about 50 miles away).

Got there at 8am and at approximately 9.30 I was delivered the bad news

Doug believes the manifold on bank 2 has broken and has caused the turbo to get jammed/damaged.  He could hear a ticking/knocking noise (not the loudest) from Bank 2 of the engine and on the roadtest the car ran 0 boost (no wastegate boost), the airflow on bank 1 went up but as the car tried to come to boost bank 2 MAF went to 0 as the air produced on bank 1 exited through the bank 2 MAF.

So he thinks I need a a new manifold and turbo at the very least (best to do both manifolds and turbos)..  It's an engine out job so not cheap.

Not sure what to do :? was hoping to get some ideas and thoughts from you guys.

Recondition my existing turbos circa £1k minimum?
Repair manifolds? Can this be done?
Get genuine new parts? Not cheap.
Upgrade to more powerful units? More expensive + added costs with intercoolers etc.
Get used parts off a breaker and try to limit the cost.

Not to mention the gearbox occasionally fails to engage in reverse too/thuds in at times...

Is it worth the work?  I love the car to bits but does it make sense to fork out thousands on it now.  Do I cut my losses now and break her, what are they worth in bits minus the gearbox and turbos? The rest of the car is spot on? What to do.... what to do :?  Spent so much on getting it how I wanted but it's all gone pear shaped in a matter of months.

Merry Christmas and a Happy new year lol....  :(

Sh£t bud sorry to hear your news thats a bummer to start the NY on. :( If it was me Id bite the bullet get it all done or maybe split the work over a few months by getting the essentials done first etc and then at least you know your car is tip top and done by a reputable crew albeit over some time. Break her and you might salvage a few quid but surely at a massive loss against an engine overhaul. Im no tech expert but I do know if you love something that bad its worth fighting for  If you want/have to sell it after wards its prob going to appeal to a lot of buyers purely because all that work has been done. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thats alot of <beep> for january mate, really gutted for you. I guess the problem is that you have spent ££££'s already on getting it to how it is now then possibly another £8-9k on getting the engine/g-box sorted.
I'd have the rear lights of you and possibly exhaust if that helps set the ball rolling??

Other way of looking is, get g-box uprated, engine uprated, ace verter, hybrid turbo's, special manifolds. Basically, do a Bam_Bam

dunc
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

Don't rebuild the gearbox, it's more miss than hit.
Get an exchange unit from ZF approx £2300
Have the turbos rebuilt to stage 2
Put it back together - 550-560PS all day long.

If Doug's still got my OE mani's laying around you can have them.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Moses on a mountain bike, sorry to hear that... can appreciate a hard decision, but as a minimum I'd cut your losses and get at least the minimum fix. You've come to far to turn back.

I've spent a lot of money on mine recently (Transmission, Rebuilt Turbo's,Valve cover Gaskets and other Items) Which I don't regret, because these cars are very Rewarding once set up correctly. And MRC is certainly capable of doing that. And by the sounds of things you love your car as much as I love mine. So I would go for it and get the work done, because they feel and drive phenomenally. To get anything Comparable you would have to spend much much more money. Just my opinion...........................

Bam Bam I sure hope you replaced Valve Cover Gaskets while that engine was out, they sure look Bad. LOL! I know you did..................................

Sorry to hear that Sid, if you can afford to, go down the repair/upgrade route. It is a one of a kind example.

That picture was when fitting up, the heads came off to install thicker compression lowering gaskets.

I figured that much, I was just kidding. Very nice setup. Must run Strong. My setup is more of a Mooch setup, I think its a good balance of Power and reliability which I need because this is my daily driver(50mi to and from work).

It looks good elevens, highly illegal of course but £2.5k Audi warranty seems like a cheap option now, they don't even do an inspection beforehand, you could claim next month! Not saying I would, but it is what golfather was suggesting!!

Owning an RS without an Audi Warranty is what should be made illegal !

Do you mean a Mooch setup in the sense that the ridiculous amount of power balances out the hideous lack of reliability? ;)

I seem to remember mooch blowing just about everything there was to blow on these cars!
