5w40 has better temperature stability, it keeps the oil pressure from dropping too much when hot which will protect the turbos. Also the oil temp will get hotter because of the two turbos.

I'm using the Castrol Edge 5w40 FST, it's not quite the right spec, the turbo diesel one is 505.01, this one is just 502.00/505.00, but states petrol/diesel.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/frmRecommendAnOil.aspx

I used this link to ask the age old question about which oil they reckon is best suited to my car. After filling in details about what mods and state of tune my car was at they came back to me with Fuchs (Silkolene) Titan Pro S as the best 5w40 fully synthetic oil available. It doesn't meet VW504 (which they do recommend for our engines in standard trim). They said that VW504 doesn't meet the demands of a tuned RS6. Makes sense to me.

What is puzzling me though is that my car only took 7.4 litres to just below the max mark on the dipstick.
(Yes it was completely drained first, and yes the oil was still hot when the sump plug was removed)!! :(

5000mile oil/filter change intervals are definitely the way to go. :bigblink:

Oil cooler & pipes must have atleast 1 litre in them. Maybe needs a little tipping to get it all out. I certainly got out 8+ when I changed mine last - and my driveway is on a slight incline.

When refilled and checked on level ground it was all fine.

Yep, I figured that, was just wondering if you parked nose up on the incline at the same time as jacking up the front for extra drainage or summat.

I will be borrowing the ramps at my friends tyre place to do it but I think I may now do the initial emptying, roll her off the ramps then jack up the front on level ground to clear out the dregs? Being too anal over it?

If you're changing the oil every 5000 miles then it might be a bit overboard IMO. Also if you successfully drained the cooler and pipes wouldn't there be a risk of the engine being starved of oil momentarily while it's all being filled up again on initial start-up? Even more so if you've used a flushing agent?

I wouldn't be using a flushing agent, the oil is pretty black and you can always do the fuse 29 cranking trick non? I have ordered all the necessary oils, spark plugs, sump plugs and filters to do both cars, thanks :).
