JC is making a lot of sense. It's a quick job to do a compression test, and probably worth a try.
My Golf has a blown head gasket (or cracked head) at the moment and it makes clouds of white smoke on acceleration, but not under other conditions, and I'm pretty sure its turbo is OK, so it's definitely worth checking the heads while you're at it. Might be worth getting a kit to check for contamination in the coolant using a contamination testing kit. This'll tell you if you've got combustion gasses in the coolant.
You're not using water injection are you?
