speaking from a buyers perspective i would rather buy a car with average mileage, not a low miler but also not 90k miles plus, the fact is that you can get cars that have had the drc replaced with good service history (inc gearbox) with about 60k to 70k on the clock for £17k from a dealer with some sort of warranty on it.

if you can do that, why would anyone pay £18k+ for a car with more miles on? doesn't make sense, for all the obvious reasons.

this may not be want you would like to hear but thats the truth, when i sold the 993, my car was somewhere between £3k to £10k less than an equivalent from a dealer, with some RS6 owners it seems to be the other way.

i understand that people might want close £18k to £19k for a good car with 90k on the clock but unless its exactly the spec that someone would like then i would be very surprised to see it sell for that. while i have been looking i have had several people email me that they would be selling their rs6 and not one of them has appealed with the exception on the one oop north, this shows that there are plenty about to choose from and its a buyers market even though there are not many anyway.

if these cars were less to buy eg £10k then i am sure that this would be different as most people would be happy to put £10k into a car, however they are not, they are £16k+ for a steady one with a cash fund in reserve for repairs; for this reason i think that dealers are more attractive to people like me where i can finance them, so the market is set by these guys. so if you are a private seller and want to sell, you need to be below the equivalent car in a dealer not above it, just as i had to be with the 993.

the fly in the ointment is that people who will be selling their cars on here are by definition, 'enthusiasts' so i would expect their cars to be top drawer and the owners pride and joy. this is where it all falls apart. if we look at pauls car, (i dont know Paul but seems like a nice chap, he has given me some good advice) i would say that its one of the better ones out there, no mods which is what i am after, compare it to the second one...same car less miles but still on the drc, however heres the rub, i am pretty sure that i could get the second car for just over £14k....

i hope that no-ones takes this email the wrong way, as no malice is meant.

on one other point re the wardrobe, i dont think that there is another car, with the poss exception of an E class AMG, that can carry a wardrobe at that speed however there are a few that will carry one at 130mph which is fast enough for me, this is why for me £20k + RS6's would mean that i would also be looking at other marques.

after all this i would still love an rs6 avant ;-)

best

Back to the car in the advert - interesting shut lines on the bonnet...

Bottom line is it's not worth £20k unless a lot of properly done mods and maintenance have been lavished on it - and judging by the quality of the ad I would suspect not. on a good note I feel the ad won't get him too many responses due to its lack of detail and the non original look to the car.

The cars we own and cherish are very probably more attractive purchases than the advertised car to the correct person who has done their research - but as DK says - the market will not get us to £20000 in price unless it's a very special example.

Andyleeds - I've had 911 original, 911G series, 993 and 996 before and during my Audi S and RS ownerships, and have to say the Porsches were by far cheaper to maintain, more robust pieces of machinery than the turbo charged Audis.

But like Mooch says - different weight, capabilities.

Some people will as you say buy from dealers but I feel this is going to become far less likely as our cars become older and good ones even more rare. When was the last time you saw an RS2 at a dealer?

I don't thing you would get the second car for £14000 as the owner will be, as you have diagnosed, an enthusiast and I feel his car is worth all of the £16000 he is asking for it and more, but sometimes sellers panic and ask too little for their cars hoping to get more response to the ads and sell theirs first..

My Avant is strikingly similar and I would be placing the ad with a £17k at the start of it. My experience tells me Paul's will still sell at close to his price.

lol. Another point (and my last) to note is that the prices will probably start creaping up with the number of available cars reducing due to being crashed / fire damaged / going missing and ending up in Somalia etc. But this probably won't happen for another 5 years or so. Look at the B5 RS4 / S4 for example. Now fetching up to £18k for an RS4 and £14k for an S4. Thats current RS6 money. Look at the RS2 awsell: Silly money being asked for this age old classic. Just sit back and wait, we'll be rich again some day.

I think what David is trying to say is perhaps he should "compare the meerkat" by looking at what is also currently available!!

Hasn't even got the right wheels on. Half resprayed? Run away. Who in their right minds thinks having the car half resprayed is a selling point? It'd make me run a mile.

Me and my meerkat took ownership of an ebay bought pine wardrobe only two days ago and blasted it home 40 miles from London to Brighton "behind" a new M3, however I did make a point of the wardrobe being behind me when they opted to leave at Gatwick and the fact my furry meerkat friend was in the boot to boot!!! They do make excellent pets you know.

I think that one other component in this is that the dealer angle is now becoming an irrelevance. Dealers between them are only selling late C5s in single figures nationally - they are getting to the point that they are no longer young enough to be of interest to them for the forecourt. Couple this with less availability as cars become accident damaged and most of those cars that are left being cherished by enthusiasts and this is likely to drive a wedge between the wheat and the not-wheat.

Just my thre'pence ha'penny.

I paid £19,250 for my 2003 Avant with 55k FSH 4 months Audi warranty and an extra 6 months 5 star warranty thrown in. The car has a few stone chips etc but has a library of receipts and history, which in my book is worth its weight in gold when buying a car of this spec. £17-19k would seem reasonable for the car you get. Anything with 80k+ mileage I would expect to pay £12-14k
