Anyone know a decent place to get gearbox service in hampshire. Either southampton or portsmouth area preferable. Or should I just go to Audi. I dont really want to travel too far with the bearbox as it is just in case it damages it further.

I wouldn't fancy it (driving there that is). If all the lights came on (limp mode) then summint is seriously wrong. Grizz now offers a flatbed collection service - I would be inclined to use it!! Mind you, you are quite a distance, so not sure on the cost of that. Best phone Grizz..

yes, but im just going to change the oil initially to see what comes out/diagnose the problem and then go from there.

Ive found a company which rebuilds automatic gearboxes so i'll get them to have a look and change the fluid.

Just make sure they know the correct procedure for changing the fluid. I know it is not just a matter of draining the fluid and adding more!

Could be the F125 position switch? Quite a common failure on the 5HP24 box I believe:

Thanks for the advice.

I dropped the car off at a local gearbox rebuilder in Fareham last night. Just to have a look. I daren't drive the car any further than I had to - to limit potential further damage. The guy has rebuilt lots of this gearbox as its quite a common one on V8s. Just going to have an initial assessment and go from there. He is quoting approx £2000 if it has to come out and based on usual suspect parts being replaced. But obviously until it actual comes out and is stroipped it could be anything. Only couple of faults logged. No engine faults just one gearbox related one identifying that incorrect gear selection was made. early days.

I'm sure I read on here somewhere that various people had had upgrades done to the gearbox. Just thinking that if the box has to come out then I may as well have it upgraded at the same time. I believe there are modifications which can be done to the valve body?? Am I right? And if so, does that mean I need to get the ECU/TCU re-mapped to match?

JD,

Who did the GB service @ 80k if you don't mind me asking?

EDIT: Scrub that - just remembered it was Rob at Camberley Audi and that I myself asked you how it went in that thread:

Ah, I even suggested starting a thread about mileage and servicing and failure rate - well, we finally did it!

Mind you, in the current gb failure thread there are no details of who did the GB service. Worth adding?

And since that GB service its been fine. I think having the stage 1 map hasnt helped. but was prob on verge of failing anyway to be fair - ive just helped it along a bit quicker than without the map!! Chatting to the gearbox guy, it pretty much depends on how its been driven / mods / regular service etc etc as to how long it will last. Ive no idea how the last owner(s) drove it and at 87,000 miles, personally, I think it's done pretty well actually.

Could be contentious. Best to avoid, I think.

I agree. Soon as I posted it, thought the same as you. Just because alot of one particular dealer/tuner (for example) had failures thereafter wouldn't necessarily be any indication of incompetence, so best leave that idea well alone methinks!!

What I will be looking for however is the number of failed gearboxes that have had an ATF change vs no ATF change and both of those vs tuned or non-tuned.

I have the car back - all fixed (hopefully).

Basically - not much oil left in the gearbox!!!! He said what did come out was free of debris so looks like I have been very lucky. Although damage may have been caused which hasnt manifested itself yet. But fingers crossed.

Two reasons for loss of oil:

a) A seal at the front of the gearbox should have a knife-edge but has worn flat so was letting oil come through.
b) the passenger side hose connection to the gearbox cooler behind the bumper was loose, needed almost a full turn to tighten.

Total cost £675 inc removal/refit of gearbox. Seal was only £8+VAT!!!

So, has new fluid AGAIN. Feels superb!

Slight ouch on the cost but a good result nonetheless
