Hi Nick,
You will be able to tell by the ride and the noise. When mine started to go it made a knocking noise just like there was something in the boot (like a spare wheel) that wasnt secure and was bouncing around over bumps, it then progressed pretty quickly (couple of weeks 100miles) to a knocking in the centre of the car underneath and the handling went to pot, it felt like it was on ice when cornering.
I think i was lucky to go 70K miles with no problems. IF you call Audi Customer services (freephone number on audi.co.uk) they should be able to give you history of your car and tell you if it has ever been replaced under warranty. If it has then thats good, if not then sorry to say but I would start saving as it will most deffo go at some point. IF you have warranty then this 'may' be covered, if its main dealer then it will be.
I got 3 of my shocks and both valves replaced under warranty but i had to pay for the fourth shock myself. If i hadnt had warranty then the best option is to go for after market shocks which are around £1500 fitted as opposed to £3000 for new DRC.
I wouldnt worry, if its gonna go it will go, and you will soon know about it. IF you hear knocking then get it checked by Audi. And if they tell you only part of the system needs replacing then dont do it, from my research, you have to replace the lot as doing it in bits will cause grief and return visits to the dealer.
Try not to worry too much and just enjoy!!
Cheers,
Lig.

I'm at 44,000 miles and, touch wood, haven't had any DRC problems and I have a warranty (Listers Assist) in place until April next year.
However reading the warranty docs it describes cover for "mechanical breakdown as a failure of a component... for a reason other than wear and tear, normal deterioration or negligence."
My car's 4 year old and will be 5 when the warranty runs out. I would have thought that the older it gets the harder it gets to claim a DRC failure is not just down to (normal) "wear and tear"? Or can all DRC failures be attributed to "mechanical breakdown" regardless of age??

DRC is a blight on Audi, they knw all about, and it definately is not wear and tear under any circumstances. Basically what happens is that the shocks are linked diagonally by the valves, and they leak oil which causes the valve to fail. ( there are better people on here to explain this Malc as there is on RS6.com) and Audi have had a directive to say that any DRC failure should result in shocks being replaced in pairs, and here is the cruncher, if it is thought that it is a hose leaking which has caused the problem, they will not replace the shockers- Which i have just discovered is what has happened to mine TWICE, and no shockers have been rplaced.
I take mine into the stealers couple times a month to get it checked out whilr it is under warranty now, for any knock or grind, sooner or later they will get fed up and just replace it I hope!!
As a side line, I did notice o mine that in the wet there was a really bad knock under braking from the front, which sounded horrid, so i took the cheif tech out in the car and it would not do it again (as per F*cking normal!!), he then told me to drive through a puddle, and low and behold the knock re appeared! He took it into the workshop and sprayed some silicone on the front bushes and it has been fine ever since. And when i tink about it this knock was only ever there in the wet
Something worth checking out maybe???!!

Malcolm, my car has a warranty with Listers Assist, and a couple of months ago I had one of the central valves/hoses replaced, all done through the warranty.MalcolmSu wrote:I'm at 44,000 miles and, touch wood, haven't had any DRC problems and I have a warranty (Listers Assist) in place until April next year.

hi all
just joined cause i got the drc's had my car since jan and its been wrong from the day i bought it. it was 9 days out of warrenty at this point....
my initial problem was down to the osf shocker, i replaced it myself afterall i own a garage its something i can do, of course had to go to audi for a recharge which it still hasnt successfully done.
my points are as follows, as we removed the shocker the failure was fatigue ie a complete fracture of the bottom of the shaft, so upon releasing the botttom wishbone and lower shocker mounting the shocker and spring fell out leaving just the top mount and centre piston/shaft in place now thats what i call alarming and dangerous. as this work is usually carried out by a dealer you may never know this is the problem after all would they admit to it? no never.
from the posts i can see 2 legal facts.
1) under (european)uk law any new item supplied has to last 12 months or be replaced its a basic european law so if youve had a shocker fitted and need another they have to replace it.
2) any item sold has to be fit for purpose, so a new top model that has suspension failures regularly and repeatedly is not fit for purpose. you would have to argue this but my 03 with 39k miles has had 18 warrenty trips including a new steering rack and every part of the suspension twice from what i can see so i have a clear not fit for purpose argument, and remeber the rs6 is a worldwide product so it has to be fit in bosnia brazil and bl**dy anywhere.
SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
i think a joint action would resolve this, in Australia when an unpopular tax was introduced farmes dumped around a 1000 tones of manure on the steps of the houses of parliment tax dropped and even our gordon brown is having a turn around on 10p tax.
being proactive and having "an undeniable attitude problem" according to my last school report some 18 years ago! why dont we all meet up at a central audi dealer and park our cars lock them up and leave them there until audi fix it with a new system. bet it gets done within a month and it will get on tv 30 or more rs6's blocking a dealership, a few banners and of course the losses that dealer will incure with no one getting in, heck ill even bring my motorhome sleeps 10 we can do it in shifts to look after the cars on behalf of other owners as we drive off in our golfs or subaru's or what ever you drive for 70 percent of you rs6 ownership
the more expensive route is 1 solicitor to represent all owners but litigation i can assurre you costs and around £600k is my estimate (ive been sued for my designs, i do kit cars so i copy stuff, by porsche, bmw and oddly audi!, they never get anywhere legally as i just ignore them and theres not a lot you can do in litigation if they dont reply)
so fellow audi suffers how do you feel about a proper joint effort, i see philt has been trying for some time to contact and resolve this and despite his valiant efforts were all still paying.
all the best

Hi Alex,
Welcome to the forum!
I love the idea Alex....wish i still had mine id be up for this. One of the main reasons for getting rid of it was because of the DRC, and Audi continue to have issues with this system on the B7 RS4 too! I dare say you might get a few disgruntled owners from there joining you.
Kit Cars?? Being sued?? Haven't heard of any manufactures in a hell of long time being warned off by the big boys. What do you produce??
Cheers
Tom

Brian James car Trailer, keep the RS6 on it as its never on the road. F150 Lightning, E30 M3, Corrola WRC, RS200 (and even thats more reliable than a RS6) R34GTR, 2MK2 Golfs, Ferrari F430 copy on MR2 (we make them).
yes it is the hawk, the rs are geniune ford moulds from pb but the meastro is gone, we make oe rs aluminium chassis and are 90% through manufactuering the 2.1 evolution engine.
