the one I have is a genuine hex-usb cable and has a valid serial number.
Out of interest, is it the HEX-USB or the HEX-USB+CAN...?

Hi TechNick

It’s the HEX-USB+CAN one, it’s a legacy product but comes with unlimited vins and supports the latest software etc.

https://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/old-i ... es/huc.php

Just to note that Ross-Tech make you pay to transfer registration now before you can access their full technical support (raise questions on their forum etc). Worth bearing in mind if you’re looking at pre-owned ones.

Edited as I put the wrong interface

Good evening all

I just wanted to provide an update as I have now heard from Ross-Tech and they have confirmed that it is a genuine cable.

My confusion was that I had spotted the negative clone comments about serial codes starting hex7386 (like mine) but the one I have is a genuine hex-usb cable and has a valid serial number.

I still have my error but I will get the cable transferred on their system so I can access their support.

Steve - apologies for messing you around this weekend. Once again, I really appreciate you doing everything you could to help me out and I’m glad you were right.
This is a most excellent outcome and I am happy to hear all is resolved regarding the authenticity of the cable - that comment from Uwe Ross, 'Chief Cook & Bottle Washer' at Ross-Tech really didn't help. As founder of VAG-COM you would have thought he would know better :bash:

Best of luck resolving your issue :-)

Yeah, I've never been very impressed with the support at Rosstech.

I agree Topman, it was those comments like the one in your screenshot that made me doubt myself. Uwe should probably say it could be a clone or a genuine legacy cable! I’m glad it’s sorted.

I’ll let you know Shoppinit, they have been very responsive so far but I haven’t raised my fault yet. They might say it’s a compatibility issue as previously mentioned here but it says it works on 2015 cars so let’s see.

Yeah, my earlier comments (including that comparison table link and questions around age of vehicle, HEX-USB vs HEX-USB+CAN, etc.), relate to my continued suspicion that it may indeed be a compatibility issue, sadly - basically, that CAN-bus interoperability may be needed for the changes you're trying to make.

It is, after all (from what info is listed above), a 2003/04 cable that you're using against a 2015 vehicle.

I've experienced similar before (hence all the info-gathering questions!) when I used my old cable against a newer (CAN-bus) vehicle, and ended up getting myself a newer VCDS cable, as they're generally backwards-compatible but rarely fully forwards-compatible... as is often the way with technology, of course! :|

Same. On my 2017 Passat, my Hex+Can can't access all modules. I will need a new cable for that, and I've been putting it off.

Thanks all, hope you’ve had good weekends.

I’ve managed to do what I wanted with VCDS- there was another process that has a different name with VCDS than OBDeleven d’oh! I also managed to change the angle of my HUD speedo (which had been annoying me since I got the car) so success all round!

The C5 section of the forum seems to be much more active than the C7 - bit of an extreme reason for me to change though!

That's cool. I think the C7 is the best looking RS6. After the C5, of course. Goes well, too. My friend's PE was a monster. The HUD is useful, but ideally it should be in years of prison time rather than mph.
