It's weird. You wouldn't think it would get hot enough for smoke after a few seconds. And if you followed the ATF filling procedure then there would have been enough ATF in the sump to start getting pumped around. And there would have been no load, in theory. I wonder if it could be another cause for the smoke. Could it be an electrical burning?

The ATF pump is often damaged / misaligned when installing the gearbox on the engine, but this isn't your case.

Also, even if it smoked briefly from dry contact on the clutches or whatever, I find it hard to imagine that it's done enough damage to cause the box to misbehave in the way you are describing.

Could there be a missed seal / spring / pipe / blocking ball on the valve body?

I did thiink that, it wasn't bone dry, just not saturated initially.
I also thought electrical, although I'd expect fault codes?
I might have to pull my head out of the oven and get back under again.

As a comparison for you.

I dropped my valve body and replaced for a serviced unit complete with the uprated transgo pressure regulating valve.

This was done over winter and while I was at it I sent the gearbox sump in for blasting and powdercoating. The turnaround on the powdercoating took longer than expected and as a result the gearbox was sat with no sump or valve body for about 3weeks and it continually drained. It couldn't of got any more oil out if it tried.

I didn't do any fancy refil procedure other than the recommended ZF sequence in the manual. I didn't see any issues at all. Let alone what you're seeing. So doubt the refil procedure is the cause or the issue. Personally.

Cheers.I hope you're right.
It usually is my fault when something goes wrong.
One thing to note, when I took all the pipes off, a lot more oil came out.
I guess that's why it took all 7 litres and still isn't full.

Just put another 1.5L in it. 8.5L total.
Thought I'd check wheel rotation while it's up.
It still tries to drive forward in reverse.
Also still lurches forward when switching off in park, making engine stop instantly.
Draining fluid now.
Going to drop the pan and see if there's anything obvious.

Have you got a spare TCU?

I don't. Cheers.
A ray of hope though. The plastic slider with a fork that accepts the selector nub, when you install the valve body, had moved and missed.
So was moving free.
Last chance here we come.

Phew. That's sorted it. Thanks everyone.

Still revs out from 1st to second, but I had to change all the pipes to be sure.

Nothing else to change now after new torque converter, C-clutch and other common 5hp24a faults fixed in 2019.

It does come out of park smoother and feels slightly better through the gears though.

Nice :)

You don’t want to be using full power in first anyway. Unless you’re a traffic light warrior.
