Project, they all are...
Re: Project, they all are...
Unfortunately I don't have many decent pictures of the car. Not been out much in it yet!
Re: Project, they all are...
Forgot to add, all the front arms and drop links were replaced a few weeks ago. Made a massive difference to the ride quality. All Lemforder arms, and Febi Bilstein lower arms that the dampers attach too.
Re: Project, they all are...
Have had the ABS control module repaired by ECUtesting in Heanor, they did repair a fault that they thought was likely to have been causing my issues. Ive not had a chance to test it as I'm part way through other jobs currently.
Have replaced both intercoolers with re-cored units by Airtech, as mine were showing oil staining on them which is usually a sign they are leaking, plus they were original, so most likely leaking.
Re: Project, they all are...
Headlights have been polished and coated to get rid of the uv damage and look pretty much like new, I'll get a photo of them tomorrow.
I've had the cam covers off to check the chain tensioner guides. Reason for this was a friend who has a C5 RS6 just had one let go and potentially has bent valves as a result. So wanted to check the condition of mine.
The drivers side one I'd estimate has less than 0.5mm deep grooves under the chain.
The passenger side slightly more.
Do any of you know what is acceptable wear?
While the cam covers were off I'm replacing the seals as who ever was last in there used some black silicone together with the original seals....

Re: Project, they all are...
2 of the breather hoses had for what ever reason been replaced with some aftermarket silicone hose, which was of course leaking....new ones are on order.
I'd had some codes for lean mixtures. The 2 seals between the mafs and the inlet were well past their best so have replaced them too. Had to get them from Audi Tradition in Germany as Audi seem to hold no stock for our cars at all...
Should get the front end built back up again tomorrow fingers crossed.

Re: Project, they all are...
Got the passenger side cam cover on, also with new seals. Plus the rest of the vac and breather pipe work back on.
And replaced the front ARB bushes as they looked past their best.

Re: Project, they all are...
Nice progress. I need to get around to doing my maf seals too, what method did you use? I'm nervous as they seem quite fragile and as you say only available from tradition.Felix2566 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 05, 2024 11:28 pm2 of the breather hoses had for what ever reason been replaced with some aftermarket silicone hose, which was of course leaking....new ones are on order.

Re: Project, they all are...
They have a thin aluminium band around the outside, I used a small screwdriver to deform it and bend it inwards. Making sure not to score the bore it sits in.
To put the new ones in requires some patience as you need to try and get them to sit squarely before pressing them in. Then use your favourite tapping tool to get them sat into the counter bore. Just slowly work your way around trying to keep it moving evenly downwards.
It was very noticeable the difference between the old and new seals. The lip on the old one was permanently deformed and had no spring left in the rubber. So I imagine it wasn't working as well as it should.

Cheers, that validates my thinking.Felix2566 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 10:37 amThey have a thin aluminium band around the outside, I used a small screwdriver to deform it and bend it inwards. Making sure not to score the bore it sits in.

Re: Project, they all are...
I'm sure I saw some photos of a bright blue coloured after market seal that some one was using. Might be easier to get than stuff from Audi Trad

Re: Project, they all are...
Bit more progress....genuine breather hoses fitted to replace the crappy silicone hose, one of which was not sealing properly. Could see oil misting all around one end.
Did have codes for lean running on the engine. I think the combination of this plus the inlet plenum seals seems to have fixed the issue. No more engine codes...

Re: Project, they all are...
Drivers window regulator cable was broken, so marked up the position of the attaching bolts and lifted out the window frame. Couldn't justify an audi replacement so went for a Valeo part.
Not too hard to fit the new regulator, 2 rivets and 2 nuts.
There is not much left of the door once the window frame is out!!

Re: Project, they all are...
Have had issues with the ABS/traction control on the car. Initially it was bringing up a code for the rear left sensor open circuit. I replaced the sensor, still had the same fault.
Cross connected the 2 rear sensors but the fault stayed on the rear left.
I sent the ABS controller to ECU Testing near Derby. They found a fault ( didnt say what) but said it was consistent with the issues I was having. Fitted the module, cleared the codes. But now have rear left sensor open circuit
.
Will do some more investigation tomorrow and see if I can get to the bottom of it.
The wheel bearing is getting replaced as it buggered. So maybe its damaged the end of the sensor....

Re: Project, they all are...
My feeling is that they didn't do the repair right. It's incredibly fiddly to repair the tiny copper pubes that break and cause this fault. You can cross-connect again to check.
Doubt the wheel bearing has any bearing (pun intended) on the issue.

Re: Project, they all are...
Was working on the car quite late yesterday.....had a look at the connector for the rear sensor this morning...yea bit of a <beep>
. All codes have gone and can get readings off the wheels while jacked up. Glad it was nothing more serious.
