Engine out job I think. Book says 22 hours labour.
So I am sure there will be a few jobs added on.
Depends on who does the job Steve. I had a recon rack fitted some years back, engine in situ.
Hope you go on ok :beerchug:

Was that on your rs6 mate.

Interesting as the garage said there was two labour rates listed. One for 22 hours and one rate was much much lower.
I have budgeted for worst case scenario.
Years ago I had to replace the steering rack hoses. That was done with engine disconnected and moved out of the way. So I just presumed the engine would also need to be moved out of the way.

Once done I will end up with a spare steering rack should anyone else have a similar problem.

Jesus, that’s some dedication for a weeping rack Steve

Who’s doing the work? What’s the hourly rate?

Every now and again we kept getting a tiny oil patch on the relatively new drive.
Had a few oil leaks which unit 20 rectified.
Lee and myself under the car with engine running and no further leaks detected.
But soon after a wet patch was noticed on the drive.
My car then failed its mot for a displaced steering rack gaiter. Fixed and mot issued.
So bought two new gaiters.
Asked garage to replace them.
That’s when it was noticed that oil was present in the gaiters.
To be fair hardly notice any drop in power steering fluid in the reservoir.
If we had a old driveway I would probably leave it.
But the occasional drops of oil on the drive has been sending us nuts. And it’s got kinda personal.

Local garage is outsourcing the rack overhaul.
And they will probably do the install.

I think hourly rate is around £60.

A local garage to pull the engine also? Have they done this before? My worry is trusting people who take work on, but likely haven’t done it before, but if they’re good I’m sure they will be fine

Foxmeister. Yes it’s a bit of a gamble. Haven’t used local garages for years. And everything has been done at unit 20.

Will go over everything in detail with the garage. To be fair
the mechanic did say he might be able to switch the rack without pulling the engine.
And weib sechs has confirmed that his rack was changed with engine in situ.
So we are still looking at options at the moment.

I believe if you get it to the stage where the rear of the subframe is dropped a couple of inches, as per engine removal, then you should be able to get in there. Still a bunch of work, but not as much as full engine pull since you can leave electrics, drive shafts and various other bits still connected. Would still be lock carrrier into service position, I guess.

Will do. Just waiting for the rack to arrive. Then we can get the wheels in motion.

Rack has now been bought and paid for.
Delivery any day now. Then off for a complete overhaul.
Also managed to get another CCM. Let my spare one go to Matty in march of last year as his need was greater than mine.
Taken me all this time to get another one.

The rack has arrived. Sent for overhaul.
Then the fun bit (installation) begins.

The overhaulers wanted to know the registration of the car it came off.
Managed to obtain it for them. Which was a 2003 RS6. As it happens the donor car is the same year as mine.
Sad to know that another one of our stunning cars has bit the dust.
