I also have a V8 (5.0) which wouldn't get near 50mpg even if I pushed it off a cliff!

Looks great, sounds fantastic with both an x-pipe and rear box removal but it would lose hands down to to a paltry golf in a game of top trumps; 0-60, 0-100, in-gear times, weight, torque, power, # of seats, boot capacity - although I don't think the last 2 were actual stats on top trumps :)

I can't knock the C5 as I was about to pull the plug on one quite a few years ago, but a B5 RS4 came along which swayed my decision. That was before the dreaded gearbox and DRC issues reared their ugly heads.

Was that LR V8 a relative of the Rover 3500 V8? Had one for a few years, liked the styling but the rest was pure rubbish, even for the day.

Yeah, same engine, although car obviously completely different.

My “newer” 31 year old Land Rover Defender 90 has a 3.9 litre efi version. Still basically the same engine though. Derived from the old Buick 215 V8.

Yup. Based on all-aluminium Chevy small block 3.5 V8. Same as the one in my Rangey (Flapper version). Later bored out to 3.9. Can be stroked to 4.4 IIRC.

Its a great engine but doesn’t produce much power in standard form. Mine sounds like it’ll need a new cam imminently. Mechanical parts are ridiculously cheap.

Chevy? Buick! I don’t think there was any crossover between the Buick 215 and Chevy V8

They went to 4.6 from the factory and can go to 5.2 litres with a stroker kit. I would up mine to 4.6, by the 4 is in such nice condition internally it seems a shame to pull it out.

Or there is a chap who makes some nice turbo manifolds for them, too.

Chevy / Buick. Tomato / tomato.

I wouldn’t want my Rangey to go any faster. It’s already incredibly scary to drive. Go into a corner too fast and you’ll feel your blood run cold as you fight the steering and have flashbacks to those videos of rolling Range Rovers folding flat as their puny roof pillars collapse like paper straws, reducing the cabin volume to zero.

Still love it though. Funny old things, classic Land Rovers.

I think it's important too only take this as banter. No for anyone to get too serious.

I did actually work out the Miles per Snickers on my bike. One Snickers bar works out at about 12 miles, assuming you putting some effort in.
Of course, especially because we all know the only superior engine is a Rotary

They are interesting aren't they - although takes a while to get your head round how they work at all. I would like one of the OS model wankel motors as a desk ornament, but they go for megabucks these days.

In terms of odd & weird engines, I think the Napier Deltic is pretty interesting. Very powerful for it's size, but so damn complicated that if they broke down, you just sent them back to Napier to refurbish.

Matt, you have odd tastes. The brits specified the Napier Deltic in the ton class minesweeper from memory. What a unit. Far to complex for marine use. Stick to the rotary, much easier to ship around.

I can't deny it.

It had awesome power for the size of motor though. They even started work on a turbo compound version
