What are they? 510 bhp? Through 2 wheels? Noice.
From Wiki:

"The E55 AMG is powered by the M113 ML55 engine, a 5.4 L V8 with a Lysholm type supercharger manufactured by IHI. The E55's engine was rated at 476 PS (350 kW; 469 hp) and 700 N·m (520 lb·ft), the low end of the supercharged 55 range due to its longer exhaust system, compared to the SL55 AMG's engine at the high end which made 517 PS (380 kW; 510 hp) and 720 N·m (530 lb·ft).[14][15] The reality however was that the E55 was actually tuned to 493hp from the factory just as the S55 AMG. Mercedes' 469 hp number was part of the marketing strategy to differentiate the more expensive S55 AMG. Only the SL55 has more power due to a larger throttle body. The supercharged 5.4 L V8 engine was mated to the Speedshift 5-speed automatic transmission, which has a torque capacity of 796 lb·ft (1,079 N·m)*, as the newer 7G-Tronic introduced in 2003 is limited to 542 lb·ft (735 N·m), not enough to handle the torque from the supercharged V8.[16][17]"

*fingers crossed..

Not a fast driver just always wanted one since the s6 avant I had, how much will it cost to fix the box if it packs in.
Speaking from experience: the 'box on my previous '6 cost me around £3700 to be rebuilt (about a year ago) which included a re-manufactured TC. I also needed a new TCU (£300 from ebay.de.) Drove fine after that and even came with a 2 year/24k mile warranty. However, when I took it to MRC to have the ECU map tweaked, Doug advised me he had to reduce the torque to 780Nm (575 lb/ft) as it kept 'jumping on the dyno.' Suspect this was down to the TC as a healthy 'box is good for 850Nm (630lb/ft) with regular fluid changes. MRC don't entertain 'box repairs of any sort and will only offer brand new exchange units from ZF in Germany. This will open your wallet to the tune of £7k (and even then there's no guarantee...)

As said above, it's somewhat of a lottery. Ideally try and find a car that has been running big torque for some time and has evidence of regular transmission fluid changes. Or, if you're not bothered about tuning then just evidence of 'box servicing which appears to be the key to longevity.

cheers blm70 for the reply, according to the service history he sent me its had 3 gearbox services and its now done 10400 miles, last one at 83000.
so after a quick look on the forum basically if its slipping, clunking or has oil anywhere near the gearbox then give it a wide birth, if not fingers tightly crossed all should be ok.

Mine was great on the test drive with no strange noises, plus the paddles and all modes worked OK. Few weeks later the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and it went into limp mode (stays in 3rd.)
I'd also recommend augmenting the crossed fingers with a gearbox fund to lessen the shock if the worst happens.
It does appear to be a very nice car though, albeit at the lower end of what a Plus will sell for and I was very close to pulling the trigger. It was just my personal experience that dissuaded me, but with luck it'll be fine for you. They are great cars and I hope you enjoy it!
