Thanks Sweggie - I have spoken with John at Mackie and he thinks the gearbox has gone.. tbf he has not checked the ATF levels but seems to think there would have been leakage signs.. He could have ran it through diagnotics but I have done that already.

Yep, prime place for leakages will be the ATF / Oil cooler mounted at the front of the car. I know, as I had to replace a corroded / split oil feed pipe there 2 months ago ;) Even a small leak will cause problems and it can be easy to miss in these wet and dreary Glasgow conditions...

The gearbox may well be toasted, but I'd still check the ATF. Just in case ;)

So £300 more expensive, how much in fuel is it going to cost to got to AMD and back? What happens if you get a fault after too? Need to weigh that up.

First of all keep calm and stay rational…listen to Sweegie and take his advice, get it to a decent Indie and get a gearbox flush and oil change…£300 at most, it may cure it. I had a major slip on mine about a year ago and did as above and it’s been fine since…I note you only joined the forum a couple of months ago and are probably a new owner, I’d be inclined to have a word with the cu*t who sold you the car…If the box is toast he almost certainly knew something wasn’t right when he sold it to you. If he has any shred of decency about him he may contribute to the price of a new box if not you’ve lost nothing by trying…If you are faced with the nightmare of replacing the box…look for a recon unit and any decent mechanic should be able to swap it out for around a grand…engine still in situ…£2.5k max all in…lastly (I note the gearbox ghouls are out in force) listen to Sweegie/Shop/JC…they knows what they’re talking about…Good Luck

To check the level you need to get under the car and undo the gearbox fill plug with the engine running. Unfortunately there's no dipstick as such and you just fill it until fluid starts to weep over the fill plug level. It's a messy job, but straight forward enough if you can get the car lifted.

If you can figure out how to get under the car, I have everything else needed to top up, refill or completely flush and filter swap the box if necessary. Don't mind helping out at all.

Hi Sweggie - I have had the car for 6 months of 6k miles..with a variety of smallish issues..not ideal.

I am a member of the AA and they will lift the car and take it to any garage that I chose. It would be good to get a feel of who I can take it to, bearing in mind that Mackies didnt seem to want to go near it..

If you have the AA moving the car for you make sure they put in on the back of a low loader and don't try and toe it. Don't assume they'll know to do that on these cars.
A lot of places seem to turn there noses up on cars like these, mainly because they don't want the hassle that goes with them and you. Remember these cars are now close to 10 years old and are about 15% of there original value. So when big things break they cost a good few pounds and we all want stuff done but not always want to pay full price. So I think you'll find it's a balancing act for some, the like's MRC, Grizz & AMD will always be happy to help because that's what they do.

AMD claim its £3598.80 inc VAT BUT , they also 'supply only' for £2499 inc VAT so labour is £1100 inc vat yea ?
they offer to repair FOC after 12 months upto 3 years, HOWEVER, they also state they only charge the cost of labour to remove/refit the box ......isnt that what they do on the original job ?
so any issues after 12 months will still cost you a further £1100 on top of what chunky79 pointed out.

Do you have any warranty of any kind left on the car ?
