The reliability has put me off buying Maserati's in the past but the Granturismo has proved its self to be streets ahead of previous models in terms of build quality and reliability. My R8 broke down 50 miles away from the dealer I bought it off don't forget, and the service I've received recently with my wife's A1 has been appalling. As for Aston Martin and reliability , don't even go there, I kept my Vantage for 1 month. The Mazza may prove to be no better than the others but it can't be any worse, and at least it didn't break down on the way home from the dealers.

Chunky, the XFR really isn't all that good. I'm in them a lot. I'm looking to do the same, around 40-50k budget for March time. I reckon I'll go 997 Turbo. A D4 S8 would be cool but I couldn't take the depreciation.
Not sure if you're bothered about that, new M5, probably out of budget this year...

Maserati wins the sound off hands down.
What the servicing cost of an Aston? Maserati? Are they chain or cambelt?

Aston servicing is not too bad. Plus there are lots of indy specialists around. I don't know what was wrong with lofty's car, but the Gaydon Astons are renowned for their reliability - at least as far as the mechanicals go. As are the R8, I suppose you could say. Maybe you're just one unlucky bar steward.

Dunno about Masers - I've never liked them.

I only like the sound from the Maserati's, looks don't tickle my fancy.
Astons on the other hand, everything about them makes me horny. Still, if i had had £40k then i would keep about £7k back for mods.

You can get a lot of extra performance out of the Vantage V8 with that kind of money for mods. The manifolds are really restrictive. Or so I hear...

Leftfield choice, but the hardcore option would be a 996 gen 2 GT3, 2003 - 2004 vintage. A Clubsport would probably have the best residuals of any 40k car you could buy too.

Dove House near me have had this one a while! Speed Yellow and the slightly higher mileage (49k) mean its well priced at 35k

Granturismo servicing every 2 years or 12k miles, around £900 at franchised dealer so not too bad for me as I do low miles, mine has just been serviced so I won't need to worry about getting it done with the amount of time I keep them.I was unlucky with the R8 as the front diff fell to bits for no apparatnt reason, it's not unheard of on the R8, but nor is it a common problem. Vantage needed a minor front suspension fix but was going to cost over £2k to put right, some of them, mine included have some serious issues with paint bubbling/corrosion, and Aston in most cases won't cover it under warranty, it also had a few other little niggles. They also look and sound better than they drive, I think that also goes for the DB9

Yep its an old interior, the same layout from launch in 1997, this second gen' GT3 being one of the last 996 models before the 997 arrived around Sept 2004 with a completely new dash. Unlike the 997s which most people spec with nav and phone etc, the 996 GT3s were pretty bare - even climate and stereo were deletable. The Clubsports with six point harnesses, one piece racing buckets and a fire extinguisher certainly liven things up....

If you want NASCAR noise, get yourself any Audi RS with the 4.2 V8 and stick a Tubi Rumore exhaust on it. Just be prepared for annoyed neighbours if you have any close by, especially if you have to start the car early in the morning. Cold start up is monstrous!
