Failed/failing
1. Rupert (2004) Standard power, failed at exactly 60k miles
2. paulm (2002) mrc Stage 1 at 40,000 ish. tc failed 42,000 mls (going manual)
3. batty (2004) STD 61k, gearbox replaced at 57k, no fluid change prior to that.
4. paul23 - STD till 30k, gearbox service at 25k, failed TC at 26k. MTM remap at 30k and on 31k now.
5. Mooch - standard when bought at 20ishk but box started to slip around 22-25k, grizz mapped it and it failed fairly soon after, (it was actually hunting only) gearbox replaced by Audi and not done well- lost Oil due to ALL sump nuts only finger tight- grizz sorted.. serviced at 40k all fine. TCU mapped and all ok until 80k. now running big torque and box does not like it. 89k. but still going well if handled with care!
6. skyegtb - New box at 25,000 miles was running MTM 535 then, not sure of failure (previous owner). Now 52,000 miles and been MTM 568'd at same time as box replaced. G/Box service at 40,000 miles, all good, no issues so far, smooth as silk.
7. w8pmc - had 2 boxes go during ownership. 1st at about 15K miles & the car was stock (had only owned it about 2 months) Soon after i had the car tuned to Sportec/AmD Stage 2-3 & was putting out over 560BHP & lbsft & the box (mapped during tune) was fine through to 40K miles when it failed again. Sold the car soon after that.
8. p3u - clutch packs and tc went due to loss of pressure in system at ~91k miles. Stock other then Milltek Exhaust at the time.
9. Hartge (2004) MTM Stage 1 (ECU & TCU) @16k. First box failed at 35k, second at 49k
10. Golffather (previous RS6 saloon) 2003 - MRC Stage 1+, Milltek. Total failure at 54k miles.

19. marv8 had a new gearbox supplied and fitted at 39167 had a "repair" due to gearbox Oil leak at 40469 (issue with replacement maybe as seems too few miles???)
Now at 49k and TC failed, swarf in gearbox so rebuild with uprated drum and new clutch packs (plus a few other bits) Car standard AFAIK.
20. MalcolmSu (2004) Standard. Bought at 36k miles just turned 93k miles and gearbox failed cause yet to be determined. Never serviced AFAIK
21.stealthyspeeder (2003) stock - 84k miles - full audi service history (no gearbox service) - got a rebuild, was told that everything in the gearbox had burnt out
22. bam_bam (2003) 113,000 failing, only one GB service on this 'box, I think (before that see bookfather's comment at no. 10) - TC stuck open, slipping and occasional slamming into gear. Currently going through a WD debacle for a fix.
23. Bilko1 (2003) 77,000 Got the dreaded torque converter stuck off code, still drove fine but got Grizz to fit an A.C.E. torque converter and recon gearbox. Gearbox was serviced by Audi 12 months previous to failure.

It's not slipping yet :biggrin3: I've done less that 600 miles on it so far and i'm on a stock map. When i've decided who i'm going to use for mapping i can put some proper torque through it and try and break it :thumb: It's got a 2 year warranty from fitment date so i'm confident it will cope fine.

Ok sorry all for bumping the old thread...
I was just doing some research on these "Slush Boxes" that audi have fitted to such a sexy car!!! Idiots...

In the list above i have not seen any1 report a failure of the gearbox in an RS6+... Could it be or is there any evidence to prove that stronger internals were fitted on the plus boxes?

Whats the chances of the gearbox actually failing... I am going to see a beautiful rs6 plus today with only 39k on the clock... Its got no warranty but just looks awesome; only thing scaring me is the gearbox; i dont mind everything else as im always on top of maintanance; but a 5.5k bill for a gearbox will really piss me off....

BTW heres the add...

If you show me a piece of string, I'll raise you a jar of jellybeans.
I think there was extra cooling added to the plus but not the 'box IIRC.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Plus boxes are no more immune to failure. The plus had 2 additional auxiliary coolant rads behind the intercoolers. Nothing extra for cooling the box AFAIK.

61k here, she was on standard power until around 57k or so. Box has never been swapped. The box is giving what I call the occasional "death rattle" (not a physical rattle ladies) but is holding in there still with only an occasional hardish gear drop.

Gearbox service carried out at 57k by MRC and the fluid may have been changed once before by the previous owner, that is unclear. MRC have it right on the limit of the torque that the box can handle (826Nm, with what will most likely be a small margin above for safety)without turning in to slip city.

I am actively willing it to die so I can tear it out and get a bombproof box slapped in, crank up the torque to 11 and see what happens.

Whats the best way to prolong the life of the gearbox? Does servicing them actually help them last longer? Ive heard horror stories that a gearbox oil change has sometimes caused the boxes to fail...

Frequent ATF and filter changes will help a bit.

A flush never caused a box to fail. The box was already toast but being held together barely by the ATF / swarf cocktail. Putting new fluid in just shows up the underlying problem quicker.

If you want to preserve your box then:

1. Drive sympathetically
2. Regular ATF services
3. Modified valve body à la sauce IPT or 517trans.
4. Don't buy an RS6.

All powerful cars with slush boxes have exactly the same box problems. It's not just an RS6 thing.

My dear chap, you need to search for every single gearbox thread on here and make up your own mind as much as possible as at the end of the day nobody knows with absolute certainty BUT, I would say that when it is a professional, trusted outfit that does the job, do it every time but that is just me. I don' see how properly flusing the box through with particulate-free fluid can be a bad thing when done right.

I am of the opinion that if the box is going to die it is going to die, worry about it when it happens or you have bought the wrong car if you want to be worry-free all the time ;)

I have changed the gearbox oil on "sealed for life" ZF auto boxes on a Jag XJR and a Volvo V70 D5 before (can't remember exactly but pretty sure that was a ZF too) and the stuff that came out of both was simply nasty.
