Said it before but seriously whilst they are far from perfect, 'Tracker' trackers are generally the best for getting you car back.
GPS and mobile phone tech is trivial to block that calling it a security system is laughable.

Reminds me of a story..... A car belonging to a friend of mine was stolen. Tracker activated and he was informed by the tracking agents that his car was doing over 500mph, as they were on the call to him. Turns out his car had been loaded onto a plane by the thieves. Tracker did the job though and police were waiting at far end when plane landed - wasn't that hard for them to match the car location with plane flight path etc. obviously more robust than just the GSM system.

I asked my insurer at renewal last year if there was a discount for having Tracker fitted and got told 'No' ! If it has manufacturers immobiliser/alarm then they wouldn't offer any discount for any other device i had fitted.
In Dave's case, Tracker probably just saved his insurer in excess of £10k+ ( used 10 just for a figure) . that kinda makes my insurers stance a bit of a laugh really.

Tells you all you need to know about how effective the trackers are in reality, as born out by the effect on premiums.

I looked at getting my tracker re-activated and was going to cost £300+. Insurance didn't go down 1p.

Guys

My car probably wasn't taken by ultra professional guys, though they seem to have worked to a plan.

Tracker did it's job. The problem with that system is that you have to alert them, and then they switch the unit on remotely. As I didn't know about the burglary until about 6 hours later, they had a head start, and time to hide the car. Tracker couldn't activate mine until the car came out from the lock-up where it had been stached. Once out, the police had the car in their control in less than 30 mins!

I have a Road Angel - and they offer a tracking service - one I hadn't paid for. It took a few phone calls to sort out, but within 24 hours the police had access to the tracking log - we knew the journey the car had started, though I think they turned it off for the last mile or two - or they dropped the unit off - don't know yet.

The police have ANPR all over the place. Within 24 hours of me reporting it stolen the police rang to check my movements - "It seems you have been up in the Midlands sir, is that correct?" - yes I had been to Leicester and back earlier in the day. They can programme the system to give them alerts on specific vehicles, and they have cameras on too. They had the systems in our area to alert on every red RS6 that passed a camera, and were checking the photos. Most thieves put plates from similar vehicles on so as not to arouse suspicion.

The ANPR system isn't of "evidential quality" for speeding - phew!!

They might aswell program it to alert on ANY RS6. There can only be about 1,000 on the road anyway.

I thought the idea of the tracker was that it could be activted anywhered, underground car park, in a container etc, so any idea as to why yours wasn't activate until the car was moved from the garage it had been stored in?

+1 . I thought that was Trackers selling point , the fact it uses VHF, GPS and GSM " to locate vehicles , whereas others only use 1 option or a combination of 2

The issue with the Tracker activation (and this is always the weak part) is that for a variety of reasons it's not always listening. Also VHF is good but like any signal stuff like being underground and in containers dramatically reduces the range.
The easiest way to think of it that it's easier to track a tracker that's pinging away than for the tracker to receive the initial request to start pinging. Once it's actually woken up it's a pretty persistent little bugger. There's been some horror stories where they've developed faults and you can't find out until they are activated but I suspect they have put in place some periodic testing of the newer units behind the scenes.

All in all, It's still the best for actually getting the car back. You also can't beat the fact that many of the police vehicles (including heli's) have the receiver on board to pick up a pinging tracker. Hell, they've even mounted receivers on lamp posts in some places.

As for ANPR - oh yes. some funky stuff going on there.

I've never met Dave but did see his original RS6 up at MRC after the tranplant work to the new one and had a chat with Doug about the water damage :)
