Abs code 00283 front left sensor short to plus

Post by allroadadi » Sat May 03, 2025 4:25 am

Hi! I’m trying to troubleshoot this error on my rs6.
So far I’ve tested the resistance and it’s 1.640 k ohms, also it reads 4.7V on the cable coming from inside the car (disconnected the abs sensor and hooked up VCDS with module open).
Cleared the code and it immediately comes back.
Took off the sensor and cleaned it really well. No dice.
Took off the abs module connector and a few prongs were corroded-ish (green, cleaned them, but now I’m wondering if it damaged the module.)
Do these cars have any relays that connect to the abs module? I couldn’t figure out from the service manual as it is not rs6 specific (abs is general for all years and models in C5 which is ridiculous). I took the knee bolster off trying to see if there are any relays for abs and couldn’t figure out.

Swap the left sensor with the right. If the problem is still showing up on the left it's probably your ABS module that is knackered. You'll need to get it repaired if so. This is the most likely explanation in my opinion.

There are no relays between the ABS module and the wheel sensors.

Update: had the module sent out for rebuild and drove the car for one day: no ABS warning light. Good call!
$160 on eBay and about 2 weeks turn around: a few days to get there, a couple of days to get it fixed and a few days to get it back. What a pain to remove the windshield washer reservoir (2 pumps and the level sensor all spin around it).
Since I was there I took the power steering reservoir off to clean the filter in there. The power steering pump has been wining more lately even after getting the air out of the system by turning the wheels left and right 10 times with the engine off and front end on jacks( during the timing belt service I removed/ disconnected the cooling pipe up front when I put the car back together since it got all tangled in the transmission radiator, hence the air in the power steering ). Anyway, the filter was badly clogged up and the cleaning helped a lot. I might buy a new reservoir, but that will take time to come in the mail and I wanted to test drive the car mostly for the abs issue.
