Carpet soaked.

Post by steve2003rs6 » Fri Aug 16, 2024 12:38 pm

Just sorted the VCDS problem.

Now NS rear carpet is absolutely soaking.
Went to the car wash yesterday. But they didn’t do anything as I was sat in the car the whole time.

All the other mats are ok.

Any one any ideas.

Any water in the spare wheel well? Could be the plastic skin inside the door trim that’s loose / missing.

Spare wheel well dry.
The only wet part is the N/S rear footwell and it is soaked.
The sides of the carpet are dry. Just the bottom part of footwell is soaked.

Saloon no rear screen wash or wipers.

Door seal is intact and neatly fitted.

Maybe check the drain holes in the bottom of the door.

Then get a hose on the area I suppose. To see where it’s coming in.

Hose pipe on it. Nothing coming in.
Managed to borrow a wet and dry vacuum.
Just going to check the coolant bottle.
But it doesn’t look like coolant.

Check the pollen filter up front. If it's deteriorated/ wet then the filter casing could be cracked and/ or the front drain is blocked, with water seeping into the cabin that way 🤔

Hoovered up one gallon of water from the near side rear footwell.
Could not get any water inside the car with a hosepipe full on and directed at roof and all over the car.

Did notice a cooling vent in the footwell which is in the area that is soaked.

Nothing else wet anywhere.

New pollen filter and new housing and seal.

Coolant reservoir checked. Still full.

Where is the front drain. Any other drains to check.

I have a gut feeling it’s coming from the plenum chamber
Eg blocked drain allowing water in the pollen filter to the air duct in the near side rear footwell.

Bit more investigation required

Not convinced
Removed the plastic trim. Pollen filter bone dry.
Plenum chamber bone dry.
I can see a 1 inch hole (approx), under the coolant reservoir, looks like a bung could of been there and has subsequently been removed

But I still think the water is coming in via the vent which is located in the right place in the bottom of the footwell. In fact it’s the only place that water can come in, without wetting anywhere else.

The sides of the footwell are dry
Front and back are dry

And yet we removed a gallon of water from the bottom of the footwell.

You sure the front carpets are dry underneath? The insulation is pretty deep.

When my air con drain was leaking I only found out as I noticed the rear carpet was wet. I removed the seat and got right under the front carpet and the sound deadening was soaked. That sound deadening is like 3 inches thick in places and holds a lot of water,

Thanks for that bilco.
Where is the air con drain.
On a Right hand drive car is it Under the carpet in Front passenger footwell ???

Could be on to something there mate.
Thinking about it don’t see drops of water on the drive like I used to, when pulling in or out of the drive.

Probably now is the time to change my ccm if the drain is on the passenger side.

Short term solution
Turn off the air con ?
Great in this weather.

Anyone want to check mine for me ?
I would probably do more damage than not.

Been reading some old threads on here.

I removed the bone dry pollen filter. Inside the housing was wet through.
The chamber that houses the filter is dry. I just don’t see how it gets in the pollen filter housing.
And could also have a leak on the air con drain pipe.

I presume this all happened at the same time as jet washing the car.
