Anyone know anything about the W12 A8s?
Re: Now thinking about 911s...
Decided a later Audi might not be a good idea. A lot of tales of massive oil burning on all engines in the years I'd be looking at. The LWB ones seem to be a bit cheaper but they won't really fit in the garage with enough room to get around the car easily. The standard length ones would be just ok.
Now seen a 911 convertible of all things. Never scratched the Porsche itch ever.
2001 car. 3.4 tiptronic.
Watched the Late brake show ghetto boxster and thought I'd rather have a 911. Boxster is more practical on load space but it was more of a competitor to the Z3 I had so it feels like a step down.
The RS is a very tough car to follow. Everything affordable is a bit meh in comparison. Even a porsche might be a bit of a let down.

The Boxster of that era is a surprisingly competent car. I've considered one myself, but I'm not a huge fan of the design. It always seems to me that you couldn't tell if they are coming or going. I like the later ones, though (718).
I reckon the 996 is one of the best value 911s. Great cars if you don't mind them sharing the headlights with the Boxster.
You're totally right about the RS6 being a hard car to follow. You have to go radically different for the change to be worthwhile, really. That's why a convertible and/or something fun and chuckable would make a nice compagnon for it. Convertible are good because you get fun sensations without having to go at stupid speeds. I think I'm going to finally get a 60's Mustang soon, probably convertible. Doesn't matter to me if it's not quick, it'll be fun to drive around.

The other choice, which is off the wall, is a mini electric level 3 with an opening sun roof which is about as far away as you can get....
911 996 interior looks a bit basic as well. Also the one I've seen seems to have had 4 ditchfinders fitted to it. I'm assuming the selling dealer has done that as MOT history is pretty clean and suggests it's been looked after.

This is surprisingly cheap, although I don't really follow Porsche prices:

Similarly priced to the one I was looking at.

Re: Anyone know anything about the W12 A8s?
Well it was lucky I didn't go trolling the RS around any dealers. Took it into my usual garage to get the washer bottle changed and the little git decided not to start after I'd parked it blocking in several cars and generally getting in the way. Stuck starter motor. Luckily they did free it off and get it out of the way. Watched someone in an HGV squeeeeeeze past it which I could hardly watch.
Booked in next week hopefully for a new starter motor. First time it's done a proper unexpected and not obvious breakdown. Started twice perfectly ok today then the third time it said sod off.

Re: Anyone know anything about the W12 A8s?
Unlucky. They usually give hints that they're going to fail.

Not a hint at all. It's always started first time and instantly. So total surprise. Glad it did it there though and not miles away from home.
Re: Anyone know anything about the W12 A8s?
My M3 start decided to fail when about to roll off the ferry. Massive queue of cars behind me and nothing but click, click, click. Thankfully it caught eventually. At least with a manual you can push start it.

Re: Anyone know anything about the W12 A8s?
My owner manual says you can tow start the RS. Doesn't tell you exactly how though!
Re: Anyone know anything about the W12 A8s?
In my manual it says "For technical reasons, your vehicle must not be tow-started".
I'd go further and say that it *can't* be tow started. Once the ATF pressure has dropped there's just no coupling between the engine from the box. I tried it in my Rangey for a laugh. If I drop it into N when driving and cut the engine, I can get the engine started again by dropping it back into D, but only within a second or so. Once the pressure drops, that's it. Starter is the only way to get the engine going again.

Thank you both.
I guess I will have to get a new starter now. Which to me means change the alternator as well “while we are at it”
