Anyone have a knackered undertray I could buy?

Post by Gripper123 » Mon Feb 19, 2024 11:43 am

Hi Everyone

Not a new member and was Gripper1 on here before but for some reason it no longer works

I've been replacing the dreaded oil cooler lines and rebuilding the oil cooler shroud which was in such a state I think it's what leads to a lot of peoples undertrays failing. Air that should be going through the cooler and out the back gets past the shroud pushes down on the undertray from above only to pushed back up by air underneath, the tray then shakes itself to pieces.

Was wondering if anyone has an old undertray I could buy, not too fussed by the condition and the state of the fastening locations, but I'm specifically looking for one that still has the sections I think direct air from the intercoolers down to the ground at the outermost rear of the tray. My tray isn't terrible, but when it did come off it ground away a lot of that section on the passenger side away. My plan is to try and make one decent reinforced tray from 2 duff ones IYSWIM

Thanks in advance.

You’ll be very lucky to find anyone who wants to give up their under tray, regardless of condition. They are just so hard to come by, I’ve been looking for years. Carbon Customs are making new trays out of glass fibre and soon carbon fibre.

I noticed that my RS6 has the build option 1SA (Without additional front underbody guard) so I’m actually wondering if some cars came without or maybe I’ve misunderstood the option?

It's worth a shot I guess,

I've rebuilt most of mine using an ebay undertray from an A6 allroad but the end profiles for the vents are hard to replicate. Maybe I will just have to wing it and marry it up to whats left of the aft intercooler shrouds.

I would have thought they'd all have undertrays as they keep the worse of the weather off certain key components? Maybe for certain countries you could spec additional protection on top of what is already there?

Sorry I just spotted you're making a new air duct. I did one out of a nice bit NS4 Aluminium a few year back, I think it came out OK:

This was the DIY guide I wrote, few years ago now : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=113332
The only variation I would recommend to what I wrote back then would be to use teflon hoses (and associated fittings). They are slightly more compact and fit a bit better.

You can buy a fibreglass undertray from carbon customs. It’s exactly the same as the standard 1 with all the ridges/dimples and air guides. Also comes in a glass black finish

Would there be much weight difference?
Are the undertrays RHD/LHD specific?

No weight difference
They are also not left or right specific. 1 fits all in this case
