Sat for 2 months : oil overfill?

Post by anditsoundslikebells » Sun Aug 27, 2023 10:25 am

I'm about to head on the journey to Switzerland.
Checked oil, water, tyres.
As it's sat for 2 months all the oil has got to the sump.
The dipstick is now showing as overfilled.
I'll attach a picture.
I filled it months ago and have been driving like this since then.

Is this OK?
What kind of warning would I get if it wasn't?

I'd run the engine for a few mins to circulate the oil, switch off and wait 5 or so mins and I'd guess itll be back to normal. I think after 2 months every last bit of oil will have drained down the engine and into the sump.

I personally wouldn't worry about. It's not a diesel that dumps soot into the sump so the amount of oil that's in there is the amount that's been in there since you last filled it up and you've been using it with no problems. The extra is probably just what's drained out of the tappets, oil pump, etc.

I would, however, pull the ECU fuse and turn the engine over on the starter motor to pre-pressurise the oilways, prime the pump, etc. I think it's fuse 28, but check the FAQ.

Best wishes for Switzerland Alex.
Will be thinking of you on a regular basis getting pulled up the mountain passes ???
