Gearbox oil sump pan corroded

Post by Swan » Fri Aug 04, 2023 11:35 pm

Hello - I’m a couple of weeks into rs6 c5 ownership. Car had a health check today and one of the things noted was a gearbox oil leak and corroded gearbox sump pan. No problem, new pan, filter, oil and gasket. However, Audi don’t supply the part anymore.

Can someone provide the part number and a recommendation for going about replacing the pan? What do you all plan to do when yours needs replacing? Can I source them from other manufactures ZF boxes? Are are they specific to the RS6?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Andrew

I have checked the usual contacts in Germany for a sump. So far no luck.
Will try RS Carparts. Update. No luck.

I believe the part number is 077 103 602A. Ref Audi.7 ZAP

Still have a couple of places that are getting back to me.

Is the original sump definitely knackered.

Some years ago a garage told me I needed a new sump. So I bought a new sump. On close inspection it turned out the sump was fine and it was suffering surface rust.
A good clean and powder coating was all it needed.

The part num I found is 01L321358C for the oil sump, but it's pretty much useless since it's NLA and not even Audi Tradition have it.

I second the thought of a good buff, rust protection and powder coating.

Is the sump pan the same as other vehicles that use the same gearbox? Didn't Jaguar also use this gearbox on something?

I believe A8's used the same GB.

There's one whole GB at rscarparts:

If the sump is made of pressed steel, I doubt it will need replaced, it can be a more common issue on higher performance bikes as most if not all the engine cases, head, barrels, sump etc are cast from an alloy of one sort or another.

The last one I replaced was a few years ago on ZX10R. It only had surface corrosion, but it looked scruffy, and I picked a split new one up for 25 quid on Ebay.. from Kawasaki, though, part was over 300 quid..so what the hell.

Cleaned the old one up and sold it for 40 quid, lol..

As per advice above, whip it off and inspect it, good clean and a paint will likely do the job.. are they alloy or steel is the question..

I reckon it’s pressed steel.
Aluminium doesn’t rust and I think it’s non magnetic.
Also the magnets are attracted to the bottom of the sump

Wow - thanks so much everyone. The garage had a look at it initially and raised the issue. I will try and crawl under and have a poke around. It’s got a leak, so I think il get the garage to do the gasket and oil change and have a good inspection while it’s off.

Am I right in thinking there is a replaceable filter inside? Does anyone know the part number for that?

Thanks!

Indeed it does have a filter. It’s also very important that you use the correct oil.
See the Audi RS6 spec/faq section at the top of the topics page.

ZF service gearbox kit strainer/filter and gaskets and optional oil

ZF lifeguard 5 kit ( 7 litres of oil )
Oil/filter/gasket.

There are two types of filter. Long neck and short neck. You want the short neck.
It’s all covered in matts post.

The very discussion on the RS4 board last month, my oil was done but no filter that I know of. The invoice showed only oils used and a couple of other wee bits and pieces I had done at the same time. Wished I had paid a bit more attention at the time..

What is the point of doing a oil change and not replacing the filter.
Beggars belief.
It also gives you the opportunity to inspect the magnets for any debris.

A while back I paid a garage to do a oil and filter change. They did a crap Job. So I had to do it myself in the end.
Traced the problem to the filter o ring being a clearance fit in the recess.
Replaced the o ring for a interference fit and all was good.

Dunno man, they might have done it. If not, the drive train oils aren't due for another 18k, think I'd get the box oil changed and the filter when it's due in next..I'll be asking for a reduction..
