Phone holder solutions

Post by Lander91 » Sun Feb 28, 2021 9:18 am

Hi everyone, I'm wondering what different phone holding solutions are being used right now with our cars.

What are you rocking?

Simple magnetic mount in the air vent, it can cope with most driving, I’ve got used to throwing the phone on the arm rest if I’m on a mission ;-)

Use a Rock mount which I got from the UK, metal and attached to a mount that clips over the vent (that is a DIY bit joining the two). Works perfectly with a Samsung Note. Particularly good for us with the summer temperatures, keeps the phone cool.

Plugs in to the cable in my arm rest which goes to my android head unit. The original gear is far to dated to be of any use to me. I need google maps and spotify etc....

That’s next on my list, probably a pioneer CarPlay unit with some integrated parking camera, my paring sensors are shot & I’ve got too used to good parking sensors on our others cars.

Thanks everyone, I was wondering about the vent type holders being too much for the vents, but it seems that they're up to the task.

MarkRS what type of headunit are you running? I'd love to retain as much of the factory look as possible, but like you I need maps and spotify.

I have a Pioneer AVH-Z9100DAB which my pixel connects to easily. Spotify, BBC iPlayer, Google Maps, Waze, WhatsApp. Everything syncs up as I enter the car by bluetooth/wifi.
ORshoots - Exclusive Swiss Cars - Audi RS6 (22).jpg
(I still have the original in case it all goes back original one day)

The car had an android and iphone cable connection into the armrest, it wasn't a great install but I just tidied it up.
Having it all sync up with all the Apps I know and charging hidden away in the armrest is perfect for me.
I wasn't sure about the headunit when it came with the car, but now think I'm lucky it was there when I bought the car.

Has anyone seen any subtle mounting solutions to a rear camera?

What's the tailgate like immediately above the rear numberplate?

I fixed a rear camera on my D2 S8 (similar vintage) immediately above the number plate, inside a cutout I made in the numberplate surround, pointing down at about 45 degrees.
It covers from the top of the bumper to just above horizontal. And it's totally invisible unless you stick your nose right up to it.
Power from the reversing light circuit and a radio link to a receiver inside the car, so no extra wiring from the boot area.

It's really there in this picture, immediately above the plate!

This is a closeup of the camera before the surround is refitted:

And this is the camera view:

I’ve seen variations on the car number plate light mounts, I have one lined up for the Skoda, going to leave the RS6 to the installer.

The camera is installed, head unit should be complete on Thursday. We deviated from the original plan, the gap between the 2 boot lid handles has enough room for a 20mm hole for the body the camera & just enough clearance between the new hole and the lock barrel.

I do like these setups. Looks like I will have to get a similar setup.
Will have to wait a while though.
Currently spending quite a bit On my pride and joy.
Also like the head units shown above.
However cannot justify one as I hardly ever have music on as I love to listen to the sound of the motor.

I would recommend anyone going aftermarket spends the ££ on a metra surround rather than the normal connects 2 type we all use. It is much slicker, although I had to get mine from the US. Worth the wait/£ though.
