Turbo whistle or transmission...

Post by Evilengine » Sat Aug 29, 2020 5:58 pm

Hi All,

Finally picked up my 2003 C5 wagon today and I have just noticed a "whine" when the car is under load. Now I am not a mechanical chap and I am not sure if this is simply the exhaust whistle I can hear or something not as fun and a transmission problem?

It has had the gearbox oil changed by MRC around 20,000 miles ago from the history it has and the gear box changes smoothly with no clunking. It has a Miltek exhaust and was remapped by MRC. The whine/whistle is more noticeable in sport than normal. I have listened to people reviewing RS6's C5's with aftermarket exhausts and they say you can hear the turbo whistle a lot more, so looking for advice from some one that has a car that has had a map and an exhaust to either allay my fears that this is just the turbo making noises or, worst case, the transmission isn't happy. Like I said, it changes very smoothly either when left to itself or using the paddles and I suspect it is the turbos as the noise spins up when you lay down power and trails off as you decelerate.

Any advice people?

Thanks

To add to the above, no noise when it's stationary, other than the engine happily singing. Checked the power steering reservoir and it's full, can't see any leaks. No smoke out the back, no loss of power.

Thanks

Panic over... Whatever it is, the garage I got it from have agreed to take it back in and resolve whatever it is.

If its been 20,000 miles since last gearbox service, suggest you might want to give it another one.
I recently had mine done at http://www.autotransuk.com at Wembley and was very pleased with the service.

It’s been less than 2000 miles since a transmission change with genuine fluid and filters done at MRC. Please check history folder the invoice should be in there.

My previous car, very well cared for example no expense spared. Enjoy it and look after her!

Regards.

Hi Ben,

That's great news, I have been through the paper work and I can't seem to find that. However I am currently sat in the garage who have sold it for you/to me and the are investigating. They are changing the gearbox oil, but I am not sure it is anything to do with the transmission given the info you have provided. The chaps at the garage have been very complimentary of you and how you cared for the car. Rest assured, it's in good hands, I intend to keep it well maintained. I have it booked in for a full service and top to bottom health check in October, I am also getting all the stone chips sorted and the roof rail paint work done. It's in for a Panasonic touch screen head unit and DAB upgrade at the weekend, it will be used as a daily and I need Bluetooth etc. I will be keeping the original head unit so it can be put back to "original" one day if desired. I have a new set of wheels coming so I can store its current winter boots until the weather turns and put some Pilot Sport 4's to go on the new wheels.

You have certainly looked after it, it's a great example.

Question for you; what pads is it running on the front? I couldn't see from the paper work.

Thanks,

Genuine Audi pads up front, fitted with the discs some 6000 miles ago. I was quite thorough with the history folder everything should be in there.

You may also come across a report from MRC late 2018 who I asked to do a very strict health check on. Some minor issues were noted and over the course of that winter I rectified everything on the list including purchasing my own Vagcom to ensure it was correct. It’s had new intercoolers, N75 valve, fuel pump, oil filter housing to block gasket, handbrake cable, diff mount, front suspension top arms etc. I was intending to tick off the list as I went but didn’t ever actually do that.
Just in case you come across the report rest assured everything identified by them was addressed, she should be in tip top shape.

I also have the set of B7 RS4 wheels and Bridgestone tyres that I had fitted to her up for sale soon if you were interested ;)

Regards.
