camshaft timing+ vvt phasing , measuring block 90 , 93

still working thru issues on the avant. :audibash:
intention is to double check belt timing and see if the vvt solenoids are operating or out of spec.

so looking at VCDS measuring block 90, 91,92,93
if 90 is within spec does that refer to timing of the belt ie. static timing .
my thinking is that timing is good but bank 2 solenoid is knackered .(or have i go it back to front?as in belt timing out and solenoids fine)

90 is showing bank 1 = -0.5 bank 2=- 0.5
93 is showing bank 1 = -2 bank 2 = -9

There was a huge thread on this fairly recently.

Not sure this is the one I'm thinking of, but there's some useful info in it:

Either way, 9 degrees out is waaaay too much.

Oh, that thread is great , thankyou
I was looking at another couple of older threads on here regarding it, but this one is more definitive

FWIW, I've struggled to get it "perfect" both times I have done the cambelt - although as you can see, I did eventually get it just right.

My lessons:
1. Make sure the cam chain shoes are in good order. I am running one new advancer, and one with replacement shoes on. Both are great. Don't use blaupart shoes, they are slightly different sizes, oddly.
2. Don't worry too much about the chains unless you have a lot of mileage - with my digital calipers I couldn't measure any stretch at all between my old chains and new (86K miles)
3. Use a dayco belt, not a contitech - it has a slightly better located fit on the gears. I went full OEM this time - but you can piece your own set together of non OEM equal quality if you research.
4. In the end, *ALL* the difference on mine between 5 degrees and 0 was the tolerance of the belt to the cam & crank wheels and the tolerance the locking bar has in it too.

So just a few goes resetting everything (slackening off the cam bolts a sniff, putting the puller on to crack it off the cam head, then cam lock back on and just giving it a tiny tweak) got it perfect.

It must be my technique that sucks!

huh? no the alternator died before i could get it sorted. was looking to monitor 90 whilst driving, currently suspect the timing belt/ static timing is out ..
its driving better now tho, managed a 4.4 to 60 and 330ft in 5.4secs . on 9-10psi (near stock base map mt6)
looking at the alternator regulator this weekend :audibash: :audibash: :audibash: :audibash: :audibash:
