Lightweight wheels.
Lightweight wheels.
I've had a good search here (and all over the net) and I think I know what I'm going to do.
I'm going to reduce unsprung weight.
I had an S2 (remapped by MRC) and put some 18" RS6 replica's on it.
They weighed 6kg more, each (both with tyres on)
It slowed the S2 down a lot.
My mate had a 1997 A4 1.8t Sport and didn't believe me, so we had a race and I went past him quite quick.
Then we swapped his standard A4 16's to my S2 and my RS6 reps to his A4.
Race time again.
I went past him like he'd let off the throttle.
I'm happy to drop an inch (insert puns here).
Looking to spend about £1500, for wheels and tyres
I've been looking at Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 (9kg)18x8 ET30 with 255/40/18.
Lightest tyres seem to be either Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2
Coninental SportContact 6
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3.
Looks like I might save 5kg per corner.
The one thing I know for definite is the oem RS6 wheels are the heaviest (by far, I actually struggle to get them off and on) wheel I've ever done.
They are the biggest though, by an inch.
Just had her 255/35/18 rear Msport wheels off the other day and they are a delight compared to ours.
Any input, experiences, shoot-me-downs welcome.
Cheers, Phil.

Re: Lightweight wheels.
TDs are going to be the best weight to cost option, anything else is going to pricy or be cheap, look poo, heavy and soft. Make sure you double check your fitment, some 18s won't fit over the front calipers.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Lightweight wheels.
Nice one. I'll look at them. Thanks Bam.

Think about these... not sure they'll be as light as the TDs (especially if you have to space them) but they'll look awesome. They should clear C5 calipers, I can tell you first-hand they don't clear the C6 discs/calipers.

Re: Lightweight wheels.
Damn they fine.
But if the TD's weight is right at 9kg these are 3kg heavier.
Guess you tried fitting one over your C6 caliper.
Must have been gutted when it didn't go on.

Re: Lightweight wheels.
Neuspeed do some nice lightweight wheels, as do OZ and many of the designs have very good brake clearance.

Re: Lightweight wheels.
Thanks. Having a look now.
Re: Lightweight wheels.
Not all lightweight wheels can handle a two-tonne monster like the RS6. Make sure you check the max. wheel load, it could be only 500-600kg in some cases.
Re: Lightweight wheels.
Good call.
Even at 500kg would it still not handle it?
Do they take shock loading into consideration with these wheel specs?

Re: Lightweight wheels.
I don't know, but I wouldn't personally risk it.
19" OZ Superleggeras have a load rating of 690kg/wheel, I'd say that is sufficient.
Here's a handy-dandy chart which I've been making/collecting:
Wheel / size / offset / weight / max. load (if found):
Enkei RSM9 7.5x19 ET50 8.30kg 700kg
OZ Superforgiata 8.5x19 ET48 8.40kg 580kg
OZ Superforgiata 8.5x19 ET37 8.57kg 500kg
Team Dynamics Pro Forged 8.5x19 ET38-50 8.50kg
HRE P40S 9.0x19 ET52 9.25kg
Neuspeed RSe10 8.0x19 ET45 9.30kg
OZ Crono HLT 8.0x19 ET ?? 9.60kg
OZ Superleggera 8.0x19 ET35 9.70kg 690kg
OZ Leggera HLT 8.5x19 ET38 9.79kg 625kg
OZ Ultraleggera HLT 8.5x19 ET38 10.07kg 680kg

Re: Lightweight wheels.
I think the recommended tyres are meant to be rated to 710kg, if that helps. OP wants 18s...
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Lightweight wheels.
Thanks Jultsu.
I'd stay with 19's if they were light enough, which they look like they are.
Just cost now, as the box is in the process of being done.
I'll start looking at prices of those in the list tomorrow.
Cheers.
