gearbox/transmission

Post by shimmy » Tue Sep 27, 2005 6:42 pm

can anybody explain to me how the auto box/tiptronic works together and the differences with Sport/Drive options on the stick.

I drove a 2002 model yesterday and could not work out why the gears kept changing on auto when i was using the tiptronic paddles.

also does any uk member know the audi extended warranty position as have had quotes from audi dealers for £550 -£1500 for extra extended warranty for 1 year.

To fully exploit the Tiptronic, you need to move the gear lever over to the right (aka touring car mode, up for up & down for down), once in that mode, you can select gears using either the paddles or stick. If you leave the selector in D or S, you can overide using the paddles, but it will revert back to D or S after about 10 seconds. The major difference between Sport & Drive is that Sport holds the gears a little longer, the shifts become shorter & if pushing on the box won't change up unless it feels it's essential. On track, you can take a bend at 5000RPM+ & the box won't shift up a gear, thus holding the revs for the exit.

As regards Warranty, i've been quoted around £1500 for 12 months extended, but IIRC it's actually a Mondial warranty (could be wrong), but it's the only one on a par with the Audi manufacturers warranty. others for a lower price will have major exclusions.
