Has anyone else had CD problems?

Post by EuroSag » Wed Jun 15, 2005 7:31 pm

The title says it all. I've got an 04 RS6 Avant and every CD I put in the changer, starts skipping/jumping. On the display screen it also sometimes says that there is no CD in (eg) slot 4, even though the CD in slot 4 is actually playing at the time!! The other day I got in the car with all 6 discs in the changer and the head unit said NO CD in each slot.

I've taken it into Audi and they have replaced the changer under warranty, but it hasn't cured the problem. They are now scratching their heads because the combined sat-nav/TV/CD controller head unit is pretty expensive and they don't want to change it un-necessarily.

BTW, the radio and sat-nav seem to work as normal.

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this, or had any idea's what it could be?

Thanks

had a similar problem with my RS4, the changer was replaced and it carried on doing the same thing, when they went to replace the head unit, they found the loom was kinked behind the head unit, a simple wire repair was carried out and the CD has never missed a beat since........

Regular problem here too but can't be @rsed to do anything about it to be honest. I tend to use the MP3 slots instead now I've learned how to!

Went back into the dealer today and they plugged in the diagnostics computer which comfirmed that there is a sporadic signal failure between the CD changer and the headunit. They are taking the car in next Thursday to have a look at the wiring loom, so i'll keep you posted.

What's the deal with the MP3's???

Interesting. Please let us know how you get on, it's an irritating fault.
The MP3 card slots are located behind the TV screen (but only on cars with the DVD satnav) and (for technological luddites such as myself) enable the downloading (not sure about the legality of this, but hey!) of loads of your favourite CDs onto a card which is so small you keep losing them.

Hmmm, unfortunately mine has got the (older and pretty rubbish) CD ROM version of the sat-nav system, so it looks like I've definitely got to get the problem sorted out if I want to listen to anything other than the radio. I'll definitely post the findings, although, I've got a feeling its going to be one of those on-going saga's.....

Right, as requested, this is the latest......

Car has been into Audi today and now they don't think it is a wiring loom problem after all. They are ordering a complete new head unit (under warranty of course) and as soon as it is in stock, the car will be going back to have it fitted.

I personally don't think this £1500/£2000 warranty claim is actually going to fix the problem. As stated above, the radio/sat nav/tv work perfectly and I would think that if the head unit was buggered, these would also be showing signs of fault. As it stands, the only fault is with the CD operation.

Call me cynical, but I think they are just clutching at straws and going for the easiest option (labour-wise), knowing full well that Audi Gmbh will pick up the tab for any parts used.

Audi (AG actually, not GmbH) know they have wiring loom problems, as does the loom supplier who warned them of the problem years ago. Winterkorn probably spends more time chivvie-ing the electrical/electronics people than any others.

Thanks for that. I'm convinced that it is a wiring loom problem, its just a shame my local dealership are trying to exhaust every other avenue first. What is the situation with fixing the loom, do they need to take all the car interior out and physically change most of the wiring, or is it just a case of removing a few dashboard panels, unplugging a few wires and plugging new ones back in??

My concern is that I know from previous experience, once bits of interior have been removed they rarely go back without developing some rattles and I really cannot tolerate this from a fairly expensive car.

Finally, and I don't know if this is related, but my tyre pressure monitoring system has now gone mental too!!! It has never before caused any problems, but the other day I start the car up and it is telling me that all 4 tyres are deflated. I didn't worry as I know once the tyres are warm usually it resets itself. The tyres then get warm, but the system is still telling me that both RL and RR have problems. I've checked the pressures (the old fashioned way) and I know there is not a problem......

I really can't take much more!!

Just a quick update for those concerned, the car went in and had a complete new headunit fitted today and it has completely cured the problem!!!

They didn't say this to me, but I suspect it is not an uncommon problem as Audi UK had quite a few new complete headunits in stock and at over £1500 each, I find that a bit strange. I wouldn't have thought that many parts departments sell them, so I reckon they are all in stock for warranty issues.

Anyway, I now have perfect music and I am a happy chappie.

Gumball, can you say which dealer you went to ?
If you prefer and don't want to publicly say, please send me a PM.

My RS4 did the same on the way to/from lemans, and my audi tech was inthe car with me at the time. Also the service manager and sales manager for the dealers were camping with us, so they all know about it, just a bit stumped as to how to fix it.

Btw, my changer was replaced about 6 months ago because it would not see disk 5. On collection the tuner no longer worked as a bad connection had developed to the aerial amp after the wiring was pulled about.

Btw, I also mentioned I was thinking of swapping to a phatbox as a result, and was told they are stopping selling these as they have a few problems with those too...

Cheers,
John.

John,

Its ok, I don't mind being public - it was Amersham Audi (01494 456000) and to be fair they have really been very good throughout - even though I did initially have some reservations (probably me just being cynical after experiencing other dealers). Anyway, the tech that figured out it was the headunit is called Lee. The master tech who was also involved is called Ivor. The person from service who I dealt with was called Ema, and yes that is Ema with one M.

BTW, mine was doing it to/from lemans too - drove me round the bend!!!

Basically, as stated above, CD's started to skip and jump the whole time, etc. Initially both Amersham Audi and I thought it was the CD changer, so this was changed under warranty - unfortunately, it didn't do bugger all!!! So, it then went back in for further investigations aimed primarily at the wiring loom. In the afternoon I was telephoned and told that it was definitely the headunit and Audi had them in stock, so could sort it out for me at my convenience, whilst I waited. I did think they were just clutching at straws and going for the easiest option, but needless to say, they did change it and now it is absolutely faultless. So, I cannot recommend them enough.

Yours sounds at bit curious, to change the CD changer I wouldn't have thought they needed to pull too much wiring about as its just a plug/unplug type affair.

Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers

Lee

That needn't be a problem. I've recently upgraded my car to the newer DVD system. The only outstanding issue is the lack of a disc with UK TMC codes.
