Yes. That seems to be the point where it's leaking. Are there any other seals in that area that are known to fail?

The main culprit is the transfer box seal, but it sounds like your front diff seal is leaking. It's not a usual place for a leak, but the bearings can wear so you're probably better off replacing both the seal and the bearing. At least check for play.

According to the workshop manual you can get the diff flange off with the engine and box in the car - whether left or right - but I've got a niggling memory that only one side can come off easily.

It "looks" easy enough to get the driveshaft out of the box on the left side. I'll remove the suspension on that side anyway since I'm doing the suspension at the same time. I'll check the bearings too.

Yeah, it does look easy enough. Famous last words!

I would want definite confirmation of the exact location of the leak before ripping things apart.

Indeed. I'll be doing other work with the car on jacks this weekend. I'll clean everything properly and see if I can spot the leak before tearing into things.
