Value of my car WTF !

Guys,
Could I have your comments on the following please. I today got a px price for my car against a 996.

The car spec is as follows:

July 2004 (04 plate) RS6 Avant in Daytona Grey with Charcoal leather.
8,200 miles - all the usual spec + cross drilled discs and folding mirrors. Car had new tyres 3,000 miles ago and is absolutely immaculate !

The price I was offered was £42k

I nearly fell off my chair, - £21k loss in 8 months. WTF !!

Is this correct - having checked on the Audi website - Iwas expecting £48 - £50k back !!

Comparing what i paid for 03 plate with 7k miles same colour combo but no cross drilled brakes or folding mirrors.
But there are a lot of cars about right now ... Audi UK are selling their cars I think.

Looking on Autotrader there was a well spec'd Red RS6 (03/53) going for £38-39k with 16k miles admittedly a private sale, amongst approx 50 other vehicles. Using that as a reference humm might give you some other metrics

Last December i was offered, for my May 04 11k mile car against a Porsche Turbo at a franchised Porsche dealer, wait for it.... £40000. I eventually got the equivalent of £48k against a 6+ at an Audi dealer.

There is a huge price discrepancy between very similar cars at different dealers in the Audi dealer network, and some cars are priced very optimistically. But if you shop around and take your time it is possible to buy an RS6 which is less than a year old and under 10k miles for *well* under £50k from a main dealer so this is probably driving your trade-in price. In a months time any Audi dealer with your car in stock would have to service it before sale, possibly fit new pads etc which will also serve to lower the price slightly.

In my experience of going the other way round and swapping a 996 for an RS6, the dealer applied a mark-up of £5.5k before putting my 996 on the forecourt, so they're probably working to similar margins (maybe a little more) on your RS6. You've probably done your homework already on your 996 but I would buy very carefully. The 997 has hit values, I lost a packet on mine (1 owner, mint, low-mileage), and the price of some cars, particularly GT2's have been in freefall for some time. With scare stories of RMS and engine failures in abundance affecting all but the turbo charged and GT3 cars, I was glad to sell my 996 when I did and would not keep one out of warranty.

Misano Red is a very acquired taste for the RS6 - I love it - but the trade and alot of buyers don't....hence Red ones are always way cheaper than other more liked colours, such as Mugello and Daytona.

Not 100% surprised at that valuation...it's indicative of the market right now. Most of the "heavy duty" performance gear is not selling in the trade at all. You only have to look at RS6's on the Audi site to see how they tend to hang around for a long, long time before finding a new owner.

Doesn't help that dealers set the prices as it's a car that doesn't "book" in the Trade guides...

Found this when I was looking to offload my C32 AMG. the car was highly specced, in good shape and had 10K miles on the clock. Local BMW dealer bid me £30K for the car on a trade in for 645, so the car lost nearly £17k in 10 months. Ended up trading it for E55 and got £42K for it. The usaul explanation was offered that the car did not book and this was the figure they were being bid in the trade...........

Same sort of thing for one of my cars its a fully loaded maserati 4200GT cost £66k in oct 03 i bought it on 22 dec 04 for £47,995 from lancaster in colchester (official dealer) who said it would loose aprox £10k in a year ! Now here we are 16 april 05 and i decided to get a new s4 avant and i am being offered £31 to £33k by dealers as a part exchange .And £37k on a sale or return basis by lancaster thats £10,995 loss in 3.5 months and £29k in 18 months from its new cost yet if you look around at cars for sale at dealers they are up for around the £43 to £46k mark it seems to me the higher end car market dealers take the p--s and are very greedy on there mark ups .and by the way the car has only done 4000 (four thousand) miles so it looks as good as it was when it came out of the showroom !!!!!! so i guess i dont want to know what my RS6 avant is worth as that will p--s me off even more.

Its the regular problem of keeping cars' a short period of time - the dealer margin is the same however long you own it. Two year old Maser Coupe's retail at c£40k asking and £38k after discount. Knock off an £8k gross margin and you have £30k trade. Therefore £33-34k for an 18 month old car is about right. The trick, which none of us ever abide by, is to keep the car a few years. Four year old Maser Coupe's trade for about £25k. Therefore you could keep it another two and a half years and lose only £3k pa!
