Coilover swap-out, is it worth it?

Post by audiacious » Mon Jan 19, 2015 4:24 pm

Now it's back on the road and having decided to keep it indefinitely, I have some improvements to make in the coming months...

The suspension; I had been driving my 944 turbo in the time while the Audi was incapacitated and I have to say I have grown to like it even more. For a 28 year old car the setup is so capable, it handles lumps in the roads sublimely. I would like to be able to emulate something approaching the Porsche. Cornering wise, going back to my H&R suspended '6 is a downgrade on anything other than recently surfaced roads. The car was on a ramp for appx. 10 days, the H&Rs are pretty old, so perhaps may need refurbishing, there seems to be very little data on the 'net about that though.

My question is to anyone who has driven H&Rs and other suspension setups. Can anyone tell me if it's worth replacing my suspension with Bilstein or KW's, is there a huge difference? If so which one? PSS9's seem to be the favoured ones here but PSS are significantly cheaper.

Thanks in advance.

I have never driven one with H&R's so don't know what they are like but i would not recommend PSS's.
The ride is horrible - really spoils the car in my opinion and i have ranted about it before on here so i will just shut up except to say at some point in the future i will try Koni sport dampers on standard springs - can't be any worse.
That's my tuppence worth anyway!

I would love to use the ride height adjustable suspension used on the A8s, though I doubt it's compatible.

I had the H&R coilovers and wasn't impressed with them and the saggy arse irritated me.

I thought I'd experiment with Koni struts with S6 Eibach springs. Initially pleased with it and the damping is great, however after 6 months the springs have settled and the car is much lower than I'd like.

I'm on the look out for standard springs to pair with the Koni struts but proving very difficult to source without a breaker wanting to sell you the whole broken DRC package.
