Mystery of self-locking doors....

Post by gord » Sat Feb 12, 2005 8:51 pm

Has anyone else experienced their car refusing to unlock? Late last night, and typically, in the p*ssing rain, mine refused to unlock itself. The drivers door eventually opened using the key but the other doors and tailgate remained resolutely shut (And couldnt be unlocked from the inside). (My three female passengers were unamused...),. The car started and drove fine, and this morning it was back to normal. Weird.

Hi Gord
Mine has done that as well. Key OK and the spare remote OK, then suddenly both remotes OK. Remember I have a 6 plus like you. It's done it 3 times now so I carry the spare remote just in case.

Keep in touch buddy, see if it happens again....how come you get 3 women then??

Cheers, MartynC

Strange! Will fish out the spare keys to keep nearby just in case.

Three inebriated (and wet) birds = Mrs M + two (recent divorcee) mates - known collectively as 'Eastwick' - and me playing taxi after a sober evening caused by driver being ill. All in full view of all the punters of Alderley Edge Wine Bar. Very embarrassing!

BTW often 'over the hill' in your direction - time for a 'plus meet' sometime?

A wise precaution.

Re 'over the hill' Yes that would be excellent, I will PM my mobile number to you and when you are coming this way, give me a call.

Cheers, MartynC

Mine has just started and it's not a +.

Only one key is affected so I thought it may be the battery.

I swapped the batteries but it seems the fob itself is to blame.

Another visit to the dealer I suppose.

"From the inside" do you mean using the driver's door switch, or pulling the mechanical door release? If you mean the latter, then that is very worrying - could be disasterous in the event of an accident/fire.

I have my doors set to auto-lock when the car is moving. On a couple of occasions the auto-locking has ceased to work - once re-enabled with VAG-COM, the second time it came back of its own accord. I suspect that there is some other control over auto-locking which I haven't fathomed out yet.

Thank God it's never happened to me, but I know of a couple of people who couldn't unlock their cars or start them becuase they were parked near a VHF transmitter. Apparently Dover is a hotspot for this, but I suspect anywhere near one in the process of actually transmitting could do it. Are there any whacking great aerials on the top of Alderley Edge?

As a radio type person I can confirm that some systems are very affected by TETRA digital radio systems as used by many Police forces and provided by BT Airwave. It is not the fault of the TETRA systems but of the crude receiver technology used in many vehicles. All the Audis I have owned have used 433.9MHz license exempt kit which despite me visiting some VERY high power transmitter sites has never given me a problem and appear to be remarkably selective. However if a powerfull enough signal is within about 500KHz of the car receiver then a considerable apparent reduction in keyfob range will occur. I am certain the problem I have had with mine is not of this origin.

About a week ago my RS6+ would not unlock using the plipper. What made it worse was that I have had all the locks removed to discourage certain light fingered individuals. The way I got over it was to point the plipper at the car and hold the unlock key down for about 15 secs. I then pressed the key again and the car unlocked. This seems to be a problem of the car and plipper getting out of sync with each other.
