Age old tyre question
Re: Age old tyre question
No, that's the whole point of a differential. You might as well say that if you turn left more than you turn right you'll wind up your diff. I just change mine by axle when they need replacing.

What were you removing them with? A wet lettuce leaf??I've just ended up spending 3hours on the ramps doing the knobbly mod
Took about 5 mine each side with a basic grinder and finishing with a small wheel on my drill! Yours must be immaculate!!

Re: Age old tyre question
That's what I thought. Also the mechanic at ramp and wrench where I was de knobbling it earlier had the same opinion. However on checking with Audi to confirm deny my friends assertion they were adamant that left to right makes no difference whatsoever hence confirming your statement and my thoughts but the front to rear diff does make a difference.Shoppinit wrote:No, that's the whole point of a differential. My gut feeling is bo...x but knowing I'm not buying tyres from them why are they so adamant quoting Audi as saying its not permissible.
I only ask to get your experience as I'm also currently sifting through tons of google rubbish to find an answer!

A metal grinding bit on a dremel plus grinding stones and a polishing stone to perfect the finishDaveperc wrote:What were you removing them with? A wet lettuce leaf??I've just ended up spending 3hours on the ramps doing the knobbly mod

It actually took about 40 mins each side plus I was inspecting a load of other stuff while on the ramp so I lost track of time and had to pay for 3hrs. No idea how long it took me in total only what I paid for!
And before you say why a Dremel? My tools are locked up in my business unit, my partner had both sets of keys and he was at a funeral so I was using the tools at the ramp rental unit and the Dremel bits were blunt within the first 5 mins

As an aircraft engineer the suspension arms have a beautifully smooth polished surface now

Dude, with the Dremel carbon cutting discs you could have done them in a fraction of the time imo. I go through loads of them and just buy them cheaply off Ebay etc.

I wouldn't disagree. A bit of prior planning would have been good and usually not an issue however (cue violin)Mr Footlong wrote:Dude, with the Dremel carbon cutting discs you could have done them in a fraction of the time imo. I go through loads of them and just buy them cheaply off Ebay etc.

My works car front wheel bearing gave up the ghost today and my ever reliable(touch wood) RS6 knobbly bits ate my tyres yesterday so I've ended up going with what was available.
It was heart breaking using a blunt toothed dremel grinder to slowly edge knobbly away in order for me to fit decent tyres.
My own fault really as I should have done it earlier and the tyres on there are a fair few years old be it with plenty of wear.
The previous owner didn't do many annual miles annually and the Goodyears aren't made anymore in that tread pattern plus the rubber is deteriorating so for safety new boots all round.
Obviously no sympathy wanted or required as it comes between <beep> and syphalis in the dictionary I believe.

Re: Age old tyre question
Chunky, I'm running coil overs and from what I have read it looks like GY will be first choice although I also met someone today who rates the GY but says the Conti 5 is also a great tyre which he runs on a 911 and Golf R with a stage 2 map. Still thinking about it but when the time comes it will probably be the GYOP, are you running DRC or coil overs??

Re: Age old tyre question
I used a fap wheel, less heat, it took 10mins a side.
No matter where you go, there you are.

*snigger*............... I thought they was flap wheels , but *snigger* again
Re: Age old tyre question
I just found the exact kit the garage had on Amazon.bam_bam wrote:I used a fap wheel, less heat, it took 10mins a side.
I saw Silverline and realised why it was blunt so quickly.
It's done now though. I found this snippet of info on why Audi ADVISE that all 4 tyres are replaced if front and rear tyre tread differ by more than 3mm although with differing size wheels I don't know how they can be so arbitrary at 3mm.
"Torsen based systems always recommend using equal tread depth as the mechanical locking of the system does not react to tyre diameter differences like an electronic system (e.g. Haldex). This can create drive train vibration and excess wear on drive train components."
Apparently it can take up to 5% total wheel diameter difference before this happens as long as the tread pattern is the same.

Re: Age old tyre question
I honestly cannot remember anymore. If they were flap wheels, I've renamed them fap wheels and I can't un-name, whenever I do something that, it sticks. Like, you know that 'thing' in the middle of old laptops? The 'thing' that controls the cursor? Well, I used to call that 'the clitoris', the problem was I didn't care who I'd say it to nor who heard it. It just became the only word I had in my lexicon for that thing.ahoooga wrote:*snigger*............... I thought they was flap wheels , but *snigger* again

Re: Age old tyre question
Torsen wind up? Probably also explains why some tyres come with RO1 designation specifically for Audi quattro spec models. And I thought RO1 meant that it was just made with a different inner shoulder to clear el knobblo.
Interesting, could be plausible. In any case, yeah, I always get a set of 4 tyres in one go, same make, tread etc. regardless of cost. Sometimes it's painful, last set of PS2 cost €1050 but they are definitely worth it and it gives peace of mind rather than worrying if front will go before back etc. with mixed tyres.
Enjoy the car, take it to a German autobahn if you get the chance, to see why they were built and how they behave in their natural habitat.

I shall be driving through Germany at the first hint of the ski season. I do miss the standard of driving over there and didn't realise how good it was until returning to the UK after 12years of adrenaline fuelled trips on the autobahn although Dusseldorf/Koln area was always to be avoided like the plague due to its 100/120kmh restrictions and mobile speed traps.
I'm off to get my F1s fitted shortly but has anyone tried the Vred Ultrac Vortis as against the Sessanta. One of the cars in the fifth gear article I was at had them fitted. He rated them on his Subaru Legacy which although 4wd is no where as heavy on braking or acceleration.
