Going Going Gone......Gearbox
Going Going Gone......Gearbox
Update for all, found out cars TC was shot....well so we thought..... well No, turns out Clutch packs away, I know this simply by the burnt smell in the ATF and the black colour of ATF, also fault code on Vag was intermittent fault...Clutch packs locked off, or something along those lines.. Apologies for lack of terminology. I have Mackies Transmissions doing a Recon on Gearbox with new TC, along with oil cooler and pipework for £3200. Which is a pain in the tits but hey at least I will have no hassles with her for a while, well that may be wishful thinking. Does everyone agree that the Gearbox is for the clappers yard?? I was thinking of doing a Gearbox service, do we think this is worth a pop first or just get the box done??

Re: Going Going Gone......Gearbox
TC clutch stuck OFF is the lock-up clutch inside the torque converter. It will burn the oil and make it smell like ****
The clutchpacks inside the transmission are a completely separate issue, probably they are fine right now but in any case when putting a new TC on you better get the whole thing done.
At least that's what I told myself, I've wished a few times that I had just changed the TC and taken my chances considering my box got somewhat fubar'd in the rebuild.

Doesn't really matter, at least you know what's what now Irodeon. I would take time thinking about what you do ref the repair. If you are going to sell up shortly then just get the box rebuilt by a specialist over here, if it is going to be a keeper and you are looking for a little more power in the future then I would be seriously thinking about a 517 box.

What chunk said. Mackies have a good rep, they do a fluid change on my g/box every year, plus they are an official zf dealer. Are they going to be removing the box as well?

Re: Going Going Gone......Gearbox
Now that Doug has offloaded a lot of work to Ben at MRC (very nice guy btw and is better than his boss at replying to emails
), I pestered Ben briefly about them pulling their finger out and sorting out a relationship with 517 to swap out boxes with uprated ones off the shelf.
Not a fun job for him to sort but, market may not be enough to interest them but if enough of us moaned at them they just might consider it? Doubtful but hey. Next time that I am up there I will pester again.

Footers, I'd seriously consider the 517 route, if backed by a respected specialist like MRC. Go for it.

Cheers, I am mildly clued up about the bombproof box setup
. When mine finally dies I will either be having the works done or I will get shot and buy a V10.

Re: Going Going Gone......Gearbox
Hi gtoss, yeah they're doing the lot, but from what has been said in reply to my original post, I'm thinking I will carry out a gearbox service first and for most, and see if that makes a difference, doubt it but surely worth a pop prior to new box. What I don't understand is why my gear shifts from auto, tip or paddles are all smooth as you like, and the only time she holds a gear is when I'm starting to put the foot down. Could I possible have a leak of pressure somewhere? I was confident my box was good and not on its way out? I just don't really see the point in replacing the box if its still good, I have a tc sitting ready to be installed. Think I may call grizz and see what his thoughts are, prior to making a decision?
Thanks

Ironman, if your TC is gone, then likely your clutch packs, too. Or they won't be far behind. Lots of things could cause premature wear: seals, cracked valve body, worn pump, flabby springs, fissured pipes. Your best bet is to change the lot. If Mackies know their stuff then they'll be able to tell you what tends to fail in these. When you find out, post it up. Always useful to demystify these voodoo slush boxes as much as possible.
